Women's Volleyball Falls Twice in Home Opener

Brewers will take on SUNY Morrisville at 3:00 tomorrow

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team opened its home schedule on Friday evening as the Brewers dropped a 22-25, 20-25, 22-25 match to SUNY Geneseo before falling in the nightcap to Wheaton (MA) 20-25, 22-25, 25-22, 18-25.

GENESEO 3 VC 0

FIRST SET
  • Vassar raced out to a 7-1 lead to open the set as senior Julia Hale buried two kills and an ace along with a winner and ace from sophomore Holland Kaplan.
  • Geneseo battled back to even the set at 12 all following two blocks from Cory Elder and one from Jenna Garvey.
  • After the Knights took a 15-13 lead on an ace from Carolyn Mack, the Brewers used a kill from senior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield and an ace from Kaplan to tie it at 15.
  • Following a kill from junior Rebecca Gutierrez to even the set at 20 apiece, the Knights used back-to-back kills from Madison Baumann and Madison Gamberg to go ahead 22-20.
  • Geneseo took the opening set 25-22 on a service ace from Zooey Gagnier.
SECOND SET
  • The Brewers took a 7-3 lead after a kill each from McAusland and Kaplan before Geneseo cut the lead to 7-6 on a winner from Ay'la Pascal.
  • Vassar built its lead to 11-6 on a block from first year Erin Lovett and Gutierrez along with a McAusland kill.
  • A kill and an ace from Peyton Cole trimmed the Vassar advantage to 11-10.
  • After the Knights drew even at 15 all, Vassar tallied back-to-back points, led by a McAusland winner to force a Geneseo timeout.
  • Geneseo used seven straight points to go ahead 22-18 after an ace from Alexandra Ayers and a kill from Cole.
  • Vassar drew within 23-20 after a McAusland winners but the Knights used a kill from Pascal to clinch the second set.
THIRD SET
  • Geneseo earned a 5-3 lead to begin the set before Vassar used a kill and block from Gutierrez along with an ace from senior Morgan Miller to take a 7-5 lead.
  • The Knights tied the set at eight all on a kill from Baumann before the Brewers used a kill from Hale to surge ahead 11-9.
  • Geneseo battled back to tie at 15 apiece and regained the lead on a kill from Gamberg.
  • A service ace from junior Ellie Kogan drew the Brewers even at 17 until the Knights scored three straight to push ahead 20-17.
  • Vassar responded with an ace from senior Molly Ardren and a kill from Anthony-Brumfield to take a 22-20 advantage.
  • Geneseo countered with the final five points of the match as a double block from Pascal and Garvey to clinch the match.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • McAusland led the way with eight kills and six digs while Anthony-Brumfield added five winners.
  • Gutierrez recorded five kills along with four winners and two blocks from Hale.
  • Kaplan supplied four winners, two aces and five digs, Lovett recorded three kills and two blocks and Ardren handed out a match-high 16 assists.
  • Miller lifted a team-high six digs and senior Hailey Hayes tallied 10 assists.
FOR THE KNIGHTS
  • Baumann recorded six winners along with Pascal adding six kills and two blocks.
  • Gamberg registered five kills while Cole tallied four winners, three aces and two blocks.
  • Elder finished with three kills, two aces, nine digs and two blocks.
  • Garvey handed out a team-high 11 assists while Mack added nine assists and six digs.
  • Gagnier lifted a match-high 15 digs for the Knights. 

WHEATON 3 VC 1

FIRST SET
  • The Lyons took a 7-2 lead to begin the match as Jackie Hochberg landed two aces along with a kill from Mary Caroline Mazzanti.
  • Vassar battled back to even the set at 10 on an ace from Ardren and a block from Gutierrez and Anthony-Brumfield.
  • Wheaton scored nine of the next 10 points, capped by a Sydney Lyon kill, to go ahead 19-11.
  • The Brewers trimmed the lead to 22-19 after two aces and a kill from Miller along with two winners from Kaplan.
  • Wheaton took the set after a kill from Lyon and a VC error.
SECOND SET
  • Vassar rolled to a 7-3 lead to start the set as sophomore Francesca Medrano landed an ace while Hale and Ardren each buried kills.
  • Wheaton battled back to take a 8-7 lead on a kill from Hollis Hanson before Vassar responded to go ahead 14-11 after an ace from Hayes.
  • Another Hochberg ace put the Lyons ahead 17-15 until Kaplan's kill drew the Brewers even at 21 all.
  • Wheaton used an ace from Lyon to earn the second set victory.
THIRD SET
  • The two squads traded points in the opening stages of the set as Wheaton took a slim 8-6 lead on a kill from Hanson.
  • The lead expanded to 15-8 on a Lyon kill before Vassar used a seven point surge to cut the lead to one after an ace from junior Ellie Kogan and kills from Anthony-Brumfield and Miller.
  • After a kill from Celina Henn put the Lyons ahead 21-20, VC scored five of the next six points to take the third set.
FOURTH SET
  • Wheaton raced out to an 8-2 advantage on two kills from Henn and one apiece from Mazzanti and Haley Jenkins.
  • Vassar trimmed the lead to 9-8 following two kills and an ace from McAusland.
  • Back-to-back winners from Mazzanti pushed the lead to 16-11 before Vassar cut the lead to 18-16 on a kill each from Anthony-Brumfield and McAusland.
  • Wheaton rattled off six straight points behind two kills from Lyon and an ace from Henn to push the lead to 24-16. The Lyons took the set on a block from Abbie Dixon and Hanson.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Kaplan registered a team-high 10 kills and three digs along with McAusland tallying nine kills, three blocks and three digs.
  • Miller added six kills, three aces and seven digs while Anthony-Brumfield tallied five winners and two blocks.
  • Hale recorded seven blocks and four digs and Hayes handed out 14 assists.
  • Ardren chipped in 11 assists, three blocks and three digs while Kogan lifted a team-high eight digs.
FOR THE LYONS
  • Lyon buried a match-high 13 kills, four aces and 15 digs while Mazzanti tallied 12 kills and three digs.
  • Henn recorded 10 winners and four digs along with Hanson registering seven kills and two blocks.
  • Hochberg finished with 11 digs and four aces and Ajsa Orban handed out a match-high 25 assists.

  • Vassar will play its final match of the Vassar Quad against SUNY Morrisville at 3:00 p.m.
