Women's Volleyball Falls in Season Opener Against Montclair State

McAusland registers 12 kills, 20 digs and three blocks for the Brewers

Montclair, NJ - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team fell 17-25, 25-16, 22-25, 19-25 in the season opener against Montclair State on Friday evening at the Panzer Athletic Center. Sophomore Maura McAusland tallied 12 kills, 20 digs and three blocks for the Brewers in the four-set loss.

FIRST SET
  • The Red Hawks took a 7-3 lead in the opening set as Kasey Trzaska buried two kills along with an ace from Bryn Bautista.
  • Vassar cut the lead to 11-10 after a block from McAusland and first year Erin Lovett before Montclair State scored five straight points on winners from Trzaska and Camryn Muuss.
  • The Red Hawks lead expanded to 20-11 after an ace and kill from Trzaska and two kills from Rachel Curran put Montclair State at set point.
  • The Brewers used two kills from McAusland along with kill and a block from senior Julia Hale to cut the lead to 24-17 before Curran buried a kill to take the set.
SECOND SET
  • The two teams traded points in the early stages as a kill from Zoey Horn knotted the set at seven all.
  • Vassar used six straight points to take a 13-7 lead behind two kills from sophomore Holland Kaplan, a winner from McAusland and an ace from senior Molly Ardren.
  • Trzaska's winner cut the lead to 18-13 before Vassar expanded the lead to 22-14 on a block from Lovett and junior Rebecca Gutierrez.
  • Back-to-back kills from Kaplan knotted the match at one set apiece for the Brewers.
THIRD SET
  • Vassar earned a 6-2 lead to open the set as Kaplan buried three straight kills along with two kills from senior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield.
  • Emily Carcich's kill brought the Red Hawks back to a 7-7 tie before Vassar battled back to take a 12-9 advantage.
  • Montclair State tallied five straight points, led by two kills from Muuss and an ace and winners from Bautista, to earn a 14-12 lead.
  • Vassar went back ahead 15-14 on a McAusland kill before the Red Hawks regained the lead at 18-15 on a Bautista winner.
  • The Brewers got within 21-19 after a block from McAusland and Hale before Montclair State took the set on a VC error.
FOURTH SET
  • The Red Hawks used an early surge to take a 9-4 lead after a Muuss kill and aces from Trzaska and Katie Rodman.
  • Vassar battled back to get within 13-10 on a kill from Kaplan before MSU surged ahead 19-11 on a kill from Sofia DiProfio.
  • Hale's service ace cut the lead to 22-17 until Montclair State clinched the match on a kill from DiProfio.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • McAusland led the way with 12 kills (.306), a career-high 20 digs, three blocks and an ace along with 10 kills, 12 digs and a block from Kaplan.
  • Hale added five kills, five blocks and an ace while Lovett tallied four kills and four blocks.
  • Ardren handed out a team-high 23 assists and sophomore T Petro lifted 12 digs.
FOR THE RED HAWKS
  • Muuss buried a match-high 17 kills and nine digs while Trzaska tallied 13 kills, 14 digs and three aces.
  • Bautista recorded 11 kills, three aces and 15 digs along with four kills and three aces from Horn.
  • Carcich handed out a match-high 41 assists in addition to three kills and 10 digs.
  • Rodman registered a team-high 19 digs for Montclair State.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar will return to action tomorrow against UMass Dartmouth at 1:00 p.m. followed by FDU-Florham at 3:00 p.m.
  • Montclair State will also face off with Corsairs and the Devils tomorrow.
