Brewers host Western Connecticut, Springfield On Opening Weekend

Brewers begin third season under Head Coach Jonathan Hood

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Men's Soccer team opens the 2024 season with three straight non-conference home games, beginning with the season opener against Western Connecticut on August 30. The home stand continues on September 1 against Springfield and concludes with a home date against Brandeis on September 7.
 
Quick Hitters
  • Vassar closed out the 2023 season with an 8-6-4 overall record and a 4-3-2 mark against Liberty League opponents.
  • The Brewers earned a berth into the Liberty League Championship Tournament where they dropped a hard fought 2-1 decision at Ithaca in the First Round.
  • The Brewers return five All-Liberty League selections from the 2023 squad in Second Team picks Duncan Keker (Oakland, CA) and Danny Berry (Haskell, NJ) and Honorable Mention honorees Jackson Allen (Chapel Hill, NC), Jared Fiske (Livingston, NJ) and Charlie Rodhouse (Carmel Valley, CA).
  • Vassar will be tasked with replacing 2023 Liberty League Player of the Year and Third Team All-American Owen Fauth who produced six goals, eight assists and 20 points a season ago.
  • Off the field, Vassar saw six players: Nolan Alexander, Otis Wildman (Tampa, FL), Fauth, Keker, Rodhouse and Fiske garner Academic All-District Honors with Fauth tabbed a Second Team Scholar All-American  by the United Soccer Coaches.
 
Captains
  • Seniors Keker and Rodhouse will serve as the Brewers' captains during the 2024 campaign.
 
Forward/Midfield
  • Keker returns as a senior after posting a team-high seven goals in 2023, including a game winner, to go along with three assists for a total of 17 points.
  • Fiske potted six goals a season ago and led the team with three game winning tallies on the way to amassing 13 points.
  • Eli Torrey (Philadelphia, PA) and Diego Pastor-Valverde (Durham, NC) each scored two goals in 2023 with Allen and Wildman supporting the offensive attack with an assist apiece.
  • Senior Jackson Hall (Washington, DC) adds to the Brewers' offensive depth after tallying a game winning goal in 2023 with fellow returners Teddy Borgos (Queensbury, NY), Immanuel Clement-Sealey (Brooklyn, NY) and Mauricio Mejia (Miami, FL) looking to support the scoring attack in 2024.
  • Newcomers Clem Grossman (Cold Spring, NY), Ken Hoang (Fort Lee, NJ), Gavin Johnson (Cincinnati, OH), Joshua Lee (Bethlehem, PA), Jack Staples (Summit, NJ) and Arden Tobolski (Chapel Hill, NC) look to make an immediate impact for Vassar when the season kicks off on Friday.
 
Midfield/Defense
  • Berry, Brandon Liu (Seattle, WA) and Rodhouse return to anchor the backline for the Brewers with the trio each starting all 18 games in 2023. Berry added to Vassar's offense a season ago with eight points on the strength of three goals and a pair of helpers.
  • The Brewers welcome back three other players from last season's squad in Bevan Howard (Brooklyn, NY), who appeared in two games, Koray Tekin (Winter Park, FL) who saw time in 18 games as a First Year and Julian Funaro (Pottstown, PA) who missed the 2023 season due to injury.
  • Vassar welcomes a pair of talented newcomers to the fold in 2024 in Caden Clifton (Oviedo, FL) and Maurizio Margiotta (Rochester, NY) who will vie for time from the start beginning Friday.
 
Goalkeeper
  • The Brewers will carry a trio of keepers in 2024, welcoming back Patrick Gale (San Antonio, TX) and Jacob Raphan (Oceanside, NY) from the 2023 roster.
  • Gale made one start between the pipes a season ago, finishing with two saves.
  • As a First Year, Raphan saw time in a pair of games in 2023, playing a total of 113:30. Raphan posted three stops and earned the victory at Springfield on September 6.
  • Quinn Davidson (Mamaroneck, NY) joins the keeper group in 2024 after earning All-League honors as a senior at Mamaroneck High School.
 
Head Coach:
  • Jonathan Hood, Ph.D returns for his third season on the sidelines in Poughkeepsie and has guided Vassar to a 17-9-11 overall record and a 9-3-6 mark against league rivals over the previous two seasons.
  • Hood guided Vassar to the NCAA Tournament in 2022 with the Brewers advancing to the Second Round for the first time since 2012.
 
Schedule
  • The Brewers will play seven challenging non-conference contests in 2024 before heading into a competitive Liberty League schedule.
  • In addition to the initial three home tilts, Vassar will play host to Drew on September 17 and Montclair State on September 21.
  • Non-league road contests include visits to New Paltz on September 11 and Oneonta on September 14.
  • Liberty League play commences on September 28 at home against Union with other league home dates including Hobart (10/12), RPI (10/30) and the regular season finale against RIT (11/2).
  • Vassar will travel to Bard and Skidmore to open October before embarking on a three-game road trip that sees the Brewers visit St. Lawernce (10/18), Clarkson (10/19) and Ithaca (10/26).
  • The Liberty League Championship begins on November 5 and continues with the Semifinal Round on November 8. The conference champion will be crowned on Sunday, November 10.
