Ithaca, NY – The #47 Vassar College Men's Tennis team battled to a hard fought 5-4 victory over second seeded and #36 Hobart on Saturday, setting up a date with RPI Sunday morning in the Liberty League Championship match.
Nolan Kubiak (Neenah, WI) battled back from a set down to clinch the victory at fifth singles.
Saturday's victory pushes Vassar to 14-5 overall, while Hobart falls to 14-6.
Doubles
- Saturday's match featured three hard fought doubles contests with Vassar trailing 2-1 heading into singles play.
- Kubiak and First Year Henry Zhang (Zhengzhou, China) got the Brewers on the board with an 8-6 victory at the second position.
- The third doubles match, featuring Pedro Cattaruzzi (Chatham, NJ) and Jay Wong (Hong Kong) went to a tie breaker with Hobart's pair earning a tough 8-7 (7-3) triumph.
Singles
- Vassar battled back to win four of the six singles contests against the Statesman to secure a berth in Sunday's title tilt.
- Eugene Lee (Chico, CA) brought the Brewers even at 2-2 following a 6-2, 6-3 victory at the fourth position, a victory that improved Lee to 13-4 on the season.
- Fellow First Year Zhang, gave the Brewers their first lead of the contest after cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 sixth singles victory. The win moved Zhang to 11-4 on the season.
- Fernando Bauermeister (Winter Park, FL) improved the Brewers' standing to 4-2 after earning a 6-4, 6-1 triumph at the third position.
- Hobart came back with victories at the first and second positions to even the match at 4-4.
- After dropping the first set at fifth singles 7-5, Kubiak rallied for 6-2 and 6-0 wins in the final two sets to send Vassar into the championship match.
What's Next
- Vassar moves through to Sunday where it will take on #22 RPI at 9:00 a.m.
- The Brewers will be in search of their first league title since topping Skidmore in 2013.
