POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The #9 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team celebrated its five seniors on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers completed sweeps of #10 Springfield 25-23, 25-23, 25-17 and Hunter 25-22, 25-17, 25-22 in the regular season finale. Vassar closes the regular season 22-6 overall and with its 6-1 UVC record, the Brewers will host the UVC Championship next weekend.
VASSAR 3 SPRINGFIELD 0
FIRST SET
- Vassar opened the first set with a 6-2 lead as senior Colin Jones buried two kills along with a winner each from junior Billy Fan and classmate Gavin Akoto.
- The Brewers lead grew to 13-8 on a service ace from junior Payne Lounsbery before Springfield cut the lead to 16-14 on a block from Evan Costley and Cole Kallick.
- A winner from Lounsbery along with an ace from senior AJ Erickson expanded the lead to 20-15 until the Pride evened the set at 20 on blocks from Kallick and Sam Levinson.
- Two blocks from senior Jacob Kim helped clinch the opening set for the Brewers.
SECOND SET
- The Brewers gained the early advantage as Jones notched two aces and a kill along with a winner from Akoto to make it 6-3.
- Two kills from Levinson brought Springfield within 8-7 before senior Vaughn Ramsey buried two winners as Vassar moved ahead 11-7.
- Five straight points from the Pride gave them a 16-13 lead, led by kills from Dylan Mulvaney and Chris Rouleau.
- Vassar regained the lead at 19-17 as Jones, Fan, Akoto and sophomore Cannon Tucker each notched a kill.
- Springfield went ahead 23-22 before back-to-back blocks from Jones and Lounsbery tallied the second set victory.
THIRD SET
- Vassar went ahead 9-4 to begin the set as Lounsbery and Kim each landed an ace along with blocks from Jones, Kim and Lounsbery.
- Rouleau's kill got the Pride within 15-10 before Akoto, Jones and Fan buried winners to make it 18-12.
- The Brewers lead expanded to 23-15 on a kill from Jones and Vassar completed the sweep following a Springfield service error.
FOR THE BREWERS
- Ramsey finished with a team-high eight kills while Jones buried seven kills and also recorded a career-best seven blocks and three service aces.
- Fan and Akoto each tallied six kills each as Fan added four digs and Akoto recorded two blocks and four digs.
- Kim handed out a team-high 14 assists and added four blocks and four digs.
- Erickson finished with 10 assists, including his 1000th career assist, and six digs while first year Tucker Shearn lifted a team-high seven digs.
FOR THE PRIDE
- Levinson recorded a match-high 11 digs along with four blocks and nine digs for Springfield.
- Costley registered eight winners while Rouleau tallied five kills and six blocks.
- Mulvaney finished with a match-high 25 assists and six digs.
VASSAR 3 HUNTER 0
FIRST SET
- Two kills from Kim along with a winner each from Ramsey and Jones spurred Vassar to an 8-3 lead to open the first set.
- Three straight kills from Guaragno, Erickson and Jones extended the lead to 11-4 before Hunter battled back with five straight points as a kill from Muhammed Al-Amine Mbaye cut the lead to 11-9.
- Vassar's lead grew to 20-17 on a kill from Kim until Cooper Moran's ace trimmed the lead to 21-20.
- The Brewers used two kills from Kim along with a winner each from Guaragno and Jones to take the opening set.
SECOND SET
- First year Armaan Desai's kill put the Brewers up 8-3Â in the opening stages of the set but the Hawks used a three point spurt to cut the lead to 10-8 on a block from Matisse Lee-Maarek and Mbaye.
- Two kills each from Ramsey and Kim built the lead back to 17-12 and a five point run, led by two blocks and a kill from Desai, expanded the advantage to 22-14.
- Mbaye's winner trimmed the lead to 24-17 before a service error gave Vassar the set victory.
THIRD SET
- Hunter earned an 11-10 lead following back-to-back blocks from Annes Deljanin before two straight blocks from Jones and Kim took a 13-11 lead.
- Moran's winner tied the set at 17 all until Vassar built the lead to 22-17 on an ace from junior Tobias Clark and blocks from Kim, Jones and Guaragno.
- The Hawks battled back to tie it at 22 on an ace from Mbaye, block from Deljanin and a kill from Demetri Gournelos.
- Vassar took advantage of three Hawks errors to complete the sweep.
FOR THE BREWERS
- Kim finished the day with 12 kills, 12 assists, a career-high nine blocks and two digs while Ramsey tallied nine kills, four blocks and three digs.
- Guaragno recorded six kills, six digs and three blocks along with Jones burying six winners and a new career-best eight blocks.
- Desai added five kills and four blocks while Erickson handed out a team-high 20 assists and four digs.
- First year Tucker Shearn lifted a match-high 13 digs.
FOR THE HAWKS
- Mbaye tallied seven kills, three blocks and four digs along with Lee-Maarek adding five winners, two blocks and four digs.
- Deljanin registered three winners, four blocks and three digs while Moran finished with two kills, 20 assists and seven digs.
- Sergio Aguardo lifted five digs for Hunter.
UP NEXT
- Vassar earned the top seed in the UVC Championship and will host the tournament beginning on Friday, April 12th.Â
- The Brewers will play the winner of fifth-seeded Hobart and fourth-seeded MIT on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
