#8 Men's Volleyball's Historic Season Concludes With National Runner-Up Finish in the National Championship

Brewers' season ends at 26-8 overall

DUBUQUE, IA - The #8 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team's historic season came to a close on Sunday afternoon in the National Championship game as the Brewers fell 22-25, 23-25, 23-25 to #4 Cal Lutheran on the campus of Loras College.

The Brewers close the season at 26-8 overall record and its first appearance in the NCAA National Championship game in program history. Junior Gavin Akoto and senior Vaughn Ramsey were both named to the All-Tournament team following their outstanding performances at the Final Four.

FIRST SET
  • Cal Lutheran took a 6-4 lead following a kill from Jordan Cooper and a block from Boris Horiuk and Ben Weber to open the first set.
  • Vassar drew even at eight following a winner from senior Colin Jones and an attack error before the Kingsmen used back-to-back points from Michael Stahl and Cooper to go ahead 10-8.
  • The Kingsmen pushed ahead 14-10 on two kills from Stahl and one winner from Horiuk and extended the lead to 18-14 on a kill from Stahl.
  • Vassar cut the lead down to 18-16 following a kill and a solo block from Jones to force a CLU timeout.
  • CLU pushed the lead back to 20-17 on a winner from Stahl and a block from Cooper before the Brewers trimmed the advantage to 20-19 on a kill from Jones and a solo block from Akoto.
  • The Kingsmen took the opening set 25-22 on Stahl's ninth kill of the match.
SECOND SET
  • Stahl's winner put the Kingsmen ahead 8-5 before the Brewers battled back to tie it at nine on two kills from Jones and a service ace from Ramsey.
  • The Brewers took a 13-11 lead as Jones and Akoto each buried a kill along with an ace from senior Jacob Kim.
  • CLU battled back to regain the lead at 15-14 before two Ramsey kills evened the second set at 16 all.
  • The Kingsmen used three winners from Stahl and a solo block from Horiuk to push the lead to 23-20.
  • Vassar cut the lead to 24-23 after kills from Akoto and Ramsey but CLU took the second set on a service error.
THIRD SET
  • The opening points went back-and-forth as Kim's kill evened the set at five before a block from Horiuk and Taylor Marks along with a kill from Horiuk pushed CLU ahead 7-5.
  • Junior Payne Lounsbery went on a three-point run as he buried a kill and then notched two straight aces to put the Brewers ahead 11-10.
  • Neither team could gain more than a one-point advantage as the set was tied at 18 all on a Ramsey kill.
  • A solo block from Kim and a kill from senior Andrew Guaragno put the Brewers ahead 21-20, leading to a Cal Lutheran timeout.
  • Consecutive points from the Kingsmen on a winner and ace for Cooper gave the Kingsmen a 22-21 lead.
  • Cal Lutheran earned its first ever National Championship with a 25-23 third set victory.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Ramsey and Jones each recorded 11 kills while Jones added two blocks and an ace.
  • Kim concluded the day with eight kills, 17 assists, three blocks and 10 digs along with Akoto tallying eight kills and two blocks.
  • Lounsbery registered four kills, two aces and four digs while senior AJ Erickson handed out a team-high 22 assists.
  • Junior Billy Fan lifted a team-high 11 digs and first year Tucker Shearn added eight digs.
FOR THE KINGSMEN
  • Stahl, the Tournament's Most Valuable Player, put together an incredible performance with 22 kills (.525), two aces and four digs.
  • Weber and Cooper each tallied seven kills and a block while Horiuk recorded five kills and four blocks.
  • T. Marks handed out a match-high 43 assists and lifted 10 digs while Logan Marks lifted eight digs.
