Baseball Falls After Late Rally From Mount Saint Vincent

Brewers close conference play against Bard this weekend in a three-game series

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team fell 10-9 on Wednesday afternoon to the University of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins following a ninth-inning rally at Prentiss Field. Vassar's record moves to 10-18 overall while Mount Saint Vincent improves to 12-17 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Vassar opened the scoring with three runs in the first as junior Birch Herring-Jackson led off with a single followed by a walk to sophomore Jensen Bergman. Senior Reid Lapekas laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners and both runners came around to score on a throwing error. Senior Jack Silvera plated Lapekas with a sacrifice fly to hold a 3-0 lead after one.
  • Vassar added a run in the second as junior Bradley Markind tripled in the right center gap and was scored on a RBI single from Herring-Jackson.
  • The Dolphins got on the board in the third as Jason Albert drew a leadoff walk and scored on an error followed by Eric Zimmerman scoring Andrew Farina on a RBI double.
  • Mount Saint Vincent cut the lead to one in the fourth when Will Granata singled to lead off the inning followed by Stephen Marinez doubling to right center and Drew Knight knocked Granata in on a sacrifice fly.The Dolphins drew even in the fifth with Johnny Brucato tripling with one out and scoring on a RBI groundout from Zimmerman.
  • Vassar regained the lead in the bottom of the inning as Bergman singled to left followed by a Lapekas hit by pitch and Silvera knocked in Bergman with a RBI double.
  • Mount Saint Vincent took its first lead of the game in the sixth as Albert doubled home Marinez followed by Farina singling through the middle to score Albert.
  • The Brewers answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning as junior Ricardo Reyna was hit by a pitch and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Finn Kaplan-Moore. Herring-Jackson singled to left and then Bergman laid down a safety squeeze bunt to tie it at six. Lapekas then singled through the middle to score Herring-Jackson to regain the lead.
  • Vassar tacked on to the lead in the seventh following senior Ty Murray being hit by a pitch and sophomore Herbert Toler III drawing a walk. Reyna knocked in both runs with a triple to left field.
  • Mount Saint Vincent rallied in the top of the ninth as Granata pushed Farina across on a sacrifice fly before Knight was hit by a pitch to score Brucato. Albert's two-out two-RBi single knocked in Zimmerman and Marinez to take the final 10-9 lead.

FOR THE BREWERS

  • Herring-Jackson finished 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored while Lapekas added two hits, a run scored and a RBI.
  • Reyna recorded a hit and two runs batted in while Silvera finished with a hit and two RBI.
  • Bergman closed the day with a hit, two runs scored and a RBI.
  • First year Rohan Mishra started on the mound and tossed two scoreless innings and struck out two.
  • Junior Luke Barrientos tossed two scoreless innings in relief and struck out two.
  • Senior Joe Sabo took the loss as he went 0.2 innings in relief and allowed four unearned runs.

FOR THE DOLPHINS

  • Albert led the way going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored while Farina added two hits and two runs scored.
  • Granata tallied a 2-for-4 day with a run batted in and a run scored along with Zimmerman knocking in two runs.
  • Knight also added a hit and two RBI along with Brucato recording a hit and two runs scored.
  • Joe DeCandia took the no-decision as he went 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, five runs (three earned), four walks and struck out two.
  • Jake Bland earned the win as he tossed two scoreless innings in relief and struck out two.

UP NEXT

  • Vassar will play its final conference regular season series this weekend against Bard, beginning with a road doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
  • Mount Saint Vincent will take on St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in a conference doubleheader on Saturday.
