Brewers Topped At #9/8 Union

Zumpano totals three points, reaches 100 for career

Schenectady, NY – The Vassar College Men's Lacrosse team continued Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon, suffering a 19-9 road loss at #9/8 Union. Three Brewers finished the tilt with multiple points, led by three from senior Ian Zumpano (Townson, MD), including the 100th of his career.
 
Saturday's loss drops Vassar to 9-5 overall on the season and to 2-4 in league play, while the Garnet Chargers move to 10-3 overall and 4-2 against league foes.
 
How It Happened
  • The two teams traded early goals with Baker Morton (West Hartford, VT) bringing the Brewers even at 1-1 at the 11:10 mark of the opening frame.
  • From there, Union scored the final two goals of the first quarter and the first four goals of the second frame to open a 7-1 lead.
  • Peter Kip and Michael Shaw sparked the run for Union with three goals apiece.
  • Troy Santise (Washington Township, NJ) and Zumpano halted the run with back-to-back tallies just under a minute apart to get the disadvantage to 7-3 with 6:54 left before halftime.
  • Shaw struck again just 53 seconds after the Zumpano marker to close out the first half scoring and send Union into the break with an 8-3 advantage.
  • Union outshot Vassar 24-15 over the opening 30 minutes.
  • First half face-offs went to the Garnet Chargers by a slim 7-6 margin, while groundballs prior to the intermission went to Union 19-13.
  • After scoring eight goals over the first two quarters on Saturday, Union put eight tallies on the board in the third period alone to open up a 16-5 lead three 45 minutes of play.
  • After Nate Johnson (Brentwood, TN) opened the third quarter scoring for Vassar, The Garnet Chargers scored six goals in a two-and-a-half minute stretch in the middle stages of the stanza to surge in front 14-4.
  • A Jack Lucey goal gave Union seven straight tallies before Gavin Arcuri (Westhampton, NY) scored with the player-advantage to halt the Union surge.
  • Johnson opened the fourth quarter scoring for the Brewers, but Vassar was unable to put together back-to-back goals until Morton and Liam McGuire (Rochester, NY) scored consecutive markers over the final 5:46 of the contest.
For The Brewers
  • Zumpano finished the contest with a goal and two assists, landing on an even 100 points for his career and is just two points shy of moving into the top-10 all-time at Vassar in points. 
  • Morton and Johnson each scored twice for Vassar.
  • Arcuri, Santise, McGuire and Shane O'Hara (Warrenton, VA) all scored for the Brewers.
  • Senior Solomon Hess (Brewster, NY) caused a team-high three turnovers and collected four groundballs.
  • Dan Bader (Forestdale, MA) picked up five groundballs.
  • Holden Anderson (Windham, ME) won 10 face-offs for the Brewers and led the team with six groundballs.
  • Drew Quinn (Garden City, NY) finished with 10 saves and three groundballs in three quarters of action in goal.
  • Danny Goldman (Commack, NY) turned aside three shots for the Brewers in the fourth quarter.
 
For The Garnet Chargers
  • Shaw closed a big day with eight points on the strength of six goals and two assists.
  • Kip scored three times and assisted on a fourth goal.
  • Zach Davis led the team with four assists.
  • Jack Mabardy scored once and assisted on two goals to go along with three caused turnovers.
  • Hazen Pike tallied twice with Mekhi Taylor and Emmett Lyne each posting a goal and an assist.
  • Matthew Paolatto went 20-for-29 in face-offs and led all players with 13 groundballs.
  • Dan Donahue picked up the win in goal, playing nearly 50 minutes and making seven saves.
