#8 Men's Volleyball Falls to #9 NYU in UVC Championship Match

Brewers will find out their fate in the NCAA Tournament tomorrow morning

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The top-seeded #8 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team fell in four sets in the UVC Championship Match as second-seeded #9 NYU earned a 15-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-18 victory to earn the UVC Championship title and the automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship. The Brewers move to 23-7 overall and will await tomorrow's selection show at 10:00 a.m. to see if they receive an at-large bid..

FIRST SET
  • Vassar took an early 6-4 lead as senior Colin Jones tallied three kills along with an ace from junior Payne Lounsbery.
  • NYU knotted the set at seven following a block from Devyn Nguyen and Buddy Cohen before Vassar rattled off seven of the next eight points, led by aces from juniors Billy Fan and Gavin Akoto and a kill each from senior Vaughn Ramsey, Akoto and Lounsbery.
  • Vassar expanded the lead to 22-11 on a winner from senior Jacob Kim before the Violets collected three straight points after a kill from Lucas Osiecki and a block from Cohen and Osiecki.
  • The Brewers took the opening set following a NYU service error.
SECOND SET
  • NYU gained a 4-1 lead to open the set before Vassar battled back to take a 6-5 lead on a kill from Fan.
  • Back-to-back kills from Emerson Evans gave the Violets a 12-11 advantage before Vassar tied the set at 14 on a block from Akoto and sophomore Cannon Tucker.
  • Jones' kill tied the set up once again at 19 before NYU took the final six points of the set, led by two kills from Osiecki and a block from Evans and Ry Kagan.
THIRD SET
  • Three straight winners from Ramsey gave the Brewers a 6-3 lead until NYU countered with six consecutive points to go ahead 9-6 on an Evans ace.
  • Vassar got within 13-12 on a Jones winner before the Violets lead grew to 17-13 on a kill from Luke Boyer.
  • The Brewers got within a point at 18-17 on Lounsbery's kill before an ace from Boyer and a kill each from Evans and Osiecki put NYU ahead 21-17.
  • NYU's lead shrunk to 21-20 after a kill from Akoto but the Violets used a winner each from Cohen, Osiecki and Kagan to take the third set.
FOURTH SET
  • The opening stages of the fourth set went back-and-forth as NYU held an 8-6 lead after an Osiecki kill.
  • The Violets lead grew to 12-17 on a Kagan winner before Vassar cut the lead to 12-9 after a kill from Fan and first year Armaan Desai.
  • NYU's lead expanded to 22-15 on a block from Nguyen and Kagan and Cohen's winner clinched the championship victory for the Violets.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Ramsey notched a team-high 12 kills and three blocks while Akoto finished with nine kills, three blocks and an ace.
  • Jones tallied seven kills and two blocks along with Kim adding five kills, 20 assists, two aces and three digs.
  • Fan registered five kills, eight digs and two aces while Lounbsery and Desai each buried four kills.
  • Senior AJ Erickson handed out 21 assists and lifted 10 digs along with first year Tucker Shearn lifting a team-high 11 digs.
FOR THE VIOLETS
  • Osiecki recorded a match-high 13 kills, four blocks and nine digs while Evans tallied 11 kills, 10 digs and three blocks.
  • Kagan finished with 10 kills and six blocks along with Boyer registering eight kills, three aces, three blocks and eight digs.
  • Cohen notched six kills and six blocks while Zach Knudsen lifted a team-high 11 digs.
  • Nguyen, who was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player, recorded a match-high 44 assists, three blocks and eight digs.
