Baseball Splits Conference Twinbill With Union

Darrell tosses 5.1 scoreless innings of relief in first career win

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - First year Will Darrell tossed 5.2 scoreless innings of relief to lead Vassar to a 14-5 victory in game one of a doubleheader against Union before the Garnet Chargers took the second game 15-5 on Saturday at Prentiss Field. Vassar's record moves to 4-12 overall and 2-4 in Liberty League play while Union moves to 11-4 on the season and 2-1 in league action.

Game One - VC 14 Union 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Garnet Chargers cracked the scoreboard first in the second inning as Ryan Cowles singled home Caleb Miller before Kyle Zaslaw scored on a wild pitch. Union's lead grew to 4-0 on a two-RBI double from Thomas Parisi.
  • Vassar scored in the third and the fourth innings to cut the lead in half as junior Marc Milano plated senior Jack Silvera on a sacrifice fly in the third followed by senior Reid Lapekas knocking in sophomore Jensen Bergman with a RBI single.
  • A bases loaded walk in the fourth to Kobe Mentzler pushed the lead to 5-2 until Darrell entered and struck out two to limit the damage.
  • Vassar exploded for a nine-run fifth inning as a bases loaded walk to Milano followed by Silvera scoring on an error cut the lead to 5-4. Junior Ricardo Reyna singled through the middle to plate two runs and Bergman's two-RBI single pushed the lead to 8-5. Lapekas knocked in another run on a single to left before Silvera's booming double to center gave the Brewers a 11-5 lead after five.
  • Vassar extended the lead to 14-5 on a bases clearing triple from Milano in the eighth.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Milano reached base four times in the game and knocked in five runs while Reyna added three hits and two runs batted in.
  • Bergman, Lapekas and Silvera all finished with two hits and two runs batted in.
  • Sophomore Addison Lee started for Vassar and went 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, five runs, six walks and struck out three.
  • Darrell threw 5.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit, one walk and struck out eight to earn his first collegiate win.
FOR THE GARNET CHARGERS
  • Parisi tallied two hits and two runs batted in while Andrew Keaveney, Miller and Cowles each added a hit.
  • Alex Oppenheimer took the loss as he lasted 4.2 innings, allowing four hits, six runs (three earned), five walks and struck out two.

Game Two - Union 15 VC 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Union scored first in the second as Cowles' sacrifice fly scored Cooper Ames before Vassar took the lead in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single from junior Michael Lee and a RBI groundout from Reyna.
  • The Garnet Chargers struck for four runs in the third inning as Keaveney plated Parisi on a single followed by a sacrifice fly from Ames. Dan Sheeran drew a bases loaded walk and a RBI groundout from Cowles gave Union a 5-2 lead.
  • Union's lead grew to 10-2 in the fourth as Sebastian Pike blasted a grand slam and Cowles doubled to left to score Ames.
  • Vassar cut the lead down to 10-4 as Laderman drove in Silvera with a single in the fifth and scored Lapekas on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
  • The Garnet Chargers scored three more runs in the seventh as Mentzer knocked in Cowles followed by Liam McIlroy scoring on an error and Pike singling through the left side to make it 13-4.
  • Laderman knocked in his third run of the game in the eighth on a single before Union tallied two runs in the ninth.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Laderman went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three runs batted in while Milano added three hits.
  • Silvera and Lapekas both finished 3-for-5, including an extra base hit, while Lee and Reyna added a hit and run batted in.
  • Junior Pat Kerrigan took the loss as he went three innings, allowing five hits, seven runs (five earned), five walks and struck out three.
  • Senior Joe Sabo tossed three scoreless innings of relief, giving up just one hit, two walks and struck out one.
FOR THE GARNET CHARGERS
  • Pike finished a big day with two hits, two runs scored and five RBI, including the grand slam, while Zaslaw and Mentzer tallied two hits apiece.
  • Cowles knocked in three runs while Ames added two RBI and Parisi scored three runs.
  • Jack Collins earned the victory on the mound as he threw six innings, scattering 12 hits and allowing four runs (three earned).
UP NEXT
  • Vassar returns to Prentiss Field on Wednesday for a non-league game agaisnt CCNY at 4:00 p.m.
  • Union plays host to Russell Sage on Tuesday afternoon.
