TROY, NY - The Vassar College Baseball traveled to the Capital Region on Monday afternoon as the Brewers earned a split of a conference doubleheader against RPI. Vassar fell 3-1 in the first game to the Engineers before battling to take a 7-3 triumph over RPI in the nightcap behind seven shutout innings from sophomore right hander
Addison Lee.
Vassar's record moves to 3-11 overall and 1-2 in conference action while the Engineers record moves to 8-5 on the season and 2-1 in Liberty League play.
Game One - VC 3 RPI 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- RPI got on the board first in the bottom half of the first inning as Walker Abdallah led off with an infield single and advanced to second on an error. He was moved to third on a flyout to right and then scored on a RBI triple from Kameron Levesque. Martin Marintchev plated Levesque on a single to center to make it 2-0 after one.
- In the bottom of the third, Jon Primerano reached on a hit by pitch and advanced to third on a single through the right side from Levesque. Primerano then scored on a double steal attempt to push the lead to 3-0.
- Vassar answered with a run in the fourth as senior Jack Silvera drew a one-out walk followed by singles from junior Daniel Laderman and junior Michael Lee to load the bases. Senior Ty Murray scored Silvera with a sacrifice fly to left field to cut it to 3-1.
- The Brewers threatened in the sixth following a leadoff walk from Silvera and a single from Lee with one out. RPI reliever Sam Stone entered and induced a double play groundout to end the threat for Vassar.
FOR THE BREWERS
- Lee finished 2-for-4 while junior Birch Herring-Jackson, senior Reid Lapekas and Laderman each recorded a hit.
- Silvera reached base twice and scored a run along with Murray driving in the lone run.
- Junior Pat Kerrigan took the loss as he tossed all eight innings, allowing seven hits, three runs and struck out four.
FOR THE ENGINEERS
- Levesque tallied a 3-for-4 day with a RBI and a run scored while Marintchev added a hit and a run batted in.
- Abdallah and Primerano each recorded a single and a run scored.
- Alex Vallee earned the win as he went 5.1 innings and gave up five hits, one run, three walks and struck out eight.
- Stone added 2.2 innings of scoreless relief and struck out two followed by Cameron Heuer picking up his second save of the series with a scoreless ninth inning.
Game Two - VC 7 RPI 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A pitcher's duel broke out in game two as A. Lee and Rylan Wade traded scoreless innings through the first four.
- Vassar broke through in the fifth as M. Lee drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third following a single from sophomore Taison Jemison. Junior Marc Milano scored M. Lee on a RBI groundout before Herring-Jackson laced a double down the right field line to make it 2-0 for the Brewers.
- The Brewers tacked on to its lead in the sixth as Lapekas led off with a single before sophomore Jensen Bergman blasted his second career collegiate homer to push the lead to 4-0. Back-to-back doubles from Silvera and M. Lee extended the lead to five after six innings.
- Senior Jaden Millstein singled to lead off the seventh and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lapekas. Following a walk to Bergman, Silvera doubled down the left field line to score both runners and expand the lead to 7-0.
- RPI answered with three runs in the eighth as three walks and a error plated a run before a two-RBI single from Matt Chotiner trimmed the lead to four. Sophomore Cade Terada-Herzer induced a ground out to end the inning and pitched a scoreless ninth to give Vassar its first conference victory.
FOR THE BREWERS
- Jemison, Lapekas and Silvera each tallied two hits while Silvera knocked in two runs and had two doubles.
- Bergman finished with a homer, two runs batted in and two runs scored while Milano and Herring-Jackson knocked in a run.
- A. Lee earned the win with seven scoreless innings, allowing just five hits, one walk and struck out five.
- Terada-Herzer pitched two shutout innings in relief and struck out three.
FOR THE ENGINEERS
- Chotiner finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI along with Aidan Hicks recording two hits.
- Wade took the loss as he tossed five-plus innings, allowing seven hits, five runs, one walk and struck out five.
UP NEXT
- The Brewers will return to Liberty League play on Friday against Union at 3:30 p.m. in Schenectady.
- RPI will play host to Middlebury on Wednesday in non-league action.
