Baseball Suffers Game One Defeat to Lewis and Clark

Brewers look to rebound tomorrow in a doubleheader with the Pioneers

PORTLAND, OR - Brett Pierson tossed a one-hit shutout over eight innings as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers earned a 12-1 victory in game one of a three-game series against the Vassar College Baseball team on Friday evening. The Pioneers record improves to 6-8-1 on the season while Vassar falls to 2-7 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vassar scored first in the first inning as senior Jack Silvera plated junior Ricardo Reyna on a sacrifice fly to open the game.
  • Lewis and Clark answered in the bottom half of the inning as Bret Potter doubled home Jack Savant and Ryan Sanderson knocked in two runs on a single to take a 3-1 lead.
  • The Pioneers added to the lead in the third on a two-run homer by Jakob Ghammachi and expanded the lead to 8-1 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Brandon Gonzaga and an infield single from Ghammachi.
  • Lewis and Clark pushed the lead to 12-1 in the fifth with Michael Aikawa driving a run in on a groundout along with a two RBI single from Gonzaga and a run scoring off a VC error.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Senior Reid Lapekas had the lone hit for Vassar while Silvera knocked in the lone run.
  • Senior Michael Came took the loss as he went 4.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, 12 runs (nine earned), three walks and struck out three.
  • First year Patrick Mill tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in relief and struck out three while junior Juan Mercado threw a scoreless ninth inning.
FOR THE PIONEERS
  • Ghammachi tallied three hits and three RBI while Savant had three hits, three runs scored and two runs driven in.
  • Sanderson finished with two hits and two RBI along with Gonzaga and Potter each adding two hits.
  • Pierson earned the win with eight innings pitched, allowing just one hit, one unearned run and struck out 13.
  • Shane Buchbinder tossed a scoreless ninth inning and struck out two.
UP NEXT
  • The two teams will square off in a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon beginning at 11:00 a.m. (Pacific).
