Women’s Basketball Topped By #23/22 Johns Hopkins

Trio of Brewers score in double-figures

St. Petersburg, FL – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team opened played in the St. Pete Classic Sunday afternoon with a 64-48 loss to #23/22 Johns Hopkins. Senior Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) led three Brewers in double-figures with a game-high 17 points.
 
Sunday's defeat drops Vassar to 5-3 overall on the season, while Johns Hopkins improves to 7-2 through nine contests.
 
First Half
  • Vassar got off to a sizzling start, scoring the game's first nine points over the first 3:54 of the contest.
  • A Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) triple gave Vassar a 5-0 lead before Gelb followed with back-to-back buckets to close out the run.
  • Vassar pushed its lead to double-figures following a Tash Thompson (Los Altos Hills, CA) three-pointer that made the score 14-4 with 3:57 left in the opening frame.
  • The Brewers lead grew to a game-high 13 points, at 21-8, following a Gelb bucket in the final minute of the first period.
  • The Brewers shot 47.4-percent in the opening 10 minutes, while holding the Blue Jays to a 21.7-percent conversion rate.
  • Johns Hopkins flipped the script in the second frame, shooting nearly 53-percent from the floor on its way to outscoring Vassar 22-6 heading into halftime.
  • Vassar matched its game-high 13-point lead twice early in the second stanza, before Johns Hopkins closed the half on a 20-2 run.
  • Vassar went without a point following a Harvey bucket with 6:05 left in the quarter.

  • Following a Gelb jumper to open the third quarter scoring, Johns Hopkins used a 6-0 spurt to spread the lead to 38-29 on a Miller conversion.
  • The Blue Jays surged in front 45-34 at the 1:53 mark of the third period on a Michaela O'Neil triple before taking a 47-38 advantage into the fourth quarter.
  • The Brewers put together a 7-0 run early in the fourth period, highlighted by five points from Harvey, to climb to within 49-45 with 6:47 left to play.
  • Johns Hopkins answered with eight of the next nine points and regained a 57-46 advantage on a Macie Feldman bucket with 3:33 left in the contest.
  • Vassar's last field goal game on a Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) bucket with 3:09 left, bringing Vassar to within nine points.
  • The Blue Jays scored the final seven of the game to finish with the final 16-point decision.
  • Vassar finished the second half shooting 21.4-percent and went 0-for-8 from three-point range.
  • The Blue Jays converted at 38.9-percent after halftime and went 1-for-8 from bonus distance.
 
For The Brewers
  • Gelb led all scorers in the game with 17 points, going 7-for-13 from the floor, to go along with four rebounds.
  • McDermed finished the afternoon with 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
  • Harvey contributed 13 points on 5-for-13 shooting and closed a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds.
  • Thompson notched four points and collected three rebounds.
  • Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) collected six rebounds and added an assist and a blocked shot.
 
For The Blue Jays
  • Feldman posted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, adding two assists and five steals.
  • Miller totaled a double-double with 12 points and 10 caroms to go along with a game-high five assists.
  • O'Neil tallied 10 points and hauled in nine rebounds.
  • Layla Henderson added nine points off the bench and added four rebounds and two assists.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot a season-low 29.5-percent from the field on Sunday and went 3-for-21 from three-point range.
  • Johns Hopkins shot 37.2-percent for the game and also struggled from behind the arc, going 2-for-15.
  • Vassar outscored Johns Hopkins from the free-throw line 9-4.
  • The Blue Jays finished with a 14-8 edge in points off turnovers.
  • Johns Hopkins dominated inside, outscoring Vassar in the paint by a 52-20 margin.
