Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team closed the season with two victories on Senior Day on Saturday as the Brewers cruised to a 25-19, 25-19, 25-19 sweep against the United States Merchant Marine Academy before battling back to defeat Utica 25-21, 23-25, 17-25, 25-16, 15-10 in the season finale.
Prior to the Utica match, Vassar honored its five seniors of
Frannie Anthony-Brumfield,
Molly Ardren,
Julia Hale,
Hailey Hayes and
Morgan Miller. The Brewers finish the season at 8-15 overall.
Vassar 3 - USMMA 0
First Set
- Merchant Marine took an early 5-2 lead after two kills from Elizabeth Kay and an ace from Sophia Murray until Vassar took its first lead at 6-5 after a kill from sophomore Maura McAusland and an ace from Hayes.
- The Brewers lead grew to 10-7 after kills from Anthony-Brumfield and McAusland along with a block from Hale and McAusland.
- USMMA got within 11-10 on a Kay winner until two kills from junior Rebecca Gutierrez and an ace from sophomore Holland Kaplan extended the advantage to 14-10.
- After a kill from Maddie Mayer trimmed the lead to 21-18, an ace from Miller and a block from Gutierrez and first year Erin Lovett led the Brewers to the set victory.
Second Set
- After Vassar held a slim 4-3 lead on an ace from Kaplan, USMMA rattled off eight straight points on two kills from Sydney Douglas and a block from Mayer and Douglas.
- Vassar battled back to cut the lead to 12-10 on three kills from McAusland and one each from Miller and Lovett.
- Following a kill from Jenny Dyke, the Brewers rattled off nine of the next 10 points to go ahead 19-14 on two aces from sophomore Francesca Medrano and two winners from Gutierrez.
- USMMA trimmed the lead to 22-18 on a kill from Kay before Vassar used an ace from Ardren and a kill from Hale to clinch the second set.
Third Set
- The two teams traded points in the early stages of the set as a Gutierrez kill put Vassar ahead 7-6.
- After a Kay winner tied the set at seven, Vassar scored four straight, led by an ace from Hayes and a winner from Kaplan, to take an 11-7 lead.
- The lead grew to 15-9 after a kill each from Lovett, Gutierrez and Hale along with an ace from McAusland.
- Vassar's advantage ballooned to 20-10 after a block from Anthony-Brumfield and Hale and back-to-back aces from Miller.
- The Mariners scored six straight points on match point to cut the lead to 24-19 before Gutierrez buried the match-sealing kill.
For The Brewers
- McAusland finished with nine kills and seven digs while Gutierrez tallied eight kills and four blocks (two solo).
- Hale and Anthony-Brumfield each recorded four kills and two blocks along with Lovett adding four kills.
- Hayes registered three kills and two aces while Kaplan had three kills, two aces and nine digs.
- Miller landed four service aces while Ardren handed out 20 assists and lifted three digs.
For The Mariners
- Kay buried eight kills while Mayer added eight kills, two blocks and two digs.
- Douglas registered seven winners while Dyke finished with three kills and four digs.
- Kylie Creech tallied 16 assists and six digs while Sophia Murray lifted a match-high 10 digs.
Vassar 3 - Utica 2
First Set
- The Brewers went ahead 4-2 to begin the match on a kill each from Hale and Anthony-Brumfield and an ace from Hayes.
- Utica battled back and took a 10-8 lead following a kill from Elizabeth Hanba and an ace from Alicia Ancewicz.
- Vassar regained the lead at 16-11 after two aces from Miller along with two kills from Medrano.
- The Brewers pushed the lead to 21-13 after two aces from Ardren and a winner each from Hale and Lovett.
- Utica stormed back with six straight points from three kills from Trinity Bailey and a kill and ace from Lauren Jones to cut the lead to 21-19.
- Vassar took the opening set following a kill each from Hayes and Miller along with an ace from Hayes.
Second Set
- The Pioneers held an 8-5 advantage following kills from Jones, Mackenzie O'Brien and Hanba.
- Vassar earned a 12-11 lead following a winner each from Lovett and Hale along with an ace from Ardren.
- Utica responded with five straight points, including four straight aces from Jones, to go ahead 16-12.
- The Brewers regained the lead at 18-17 after winners from Miller, Anthony-Brumfield and Gutierrez.
- Utica went back ahead 21-19 before the Brewers evened the score at 22 on a Gutierrez kill.
- After a McAusland kill tied the set at 23, Bailey buried consectuive kills to earn the set victory.
Third Set
- The set was knotted at six all on a Miller winner before Utica surged ahead 11-8 on an ace from Jones.
- Vassar got within 12-11 on a Miller kill before the Pioneers pushed its lead to 18-12 after an ace from Ancewicz and a kill and block from Jada Anthony.
- Utica's lead expanded to 23-13 after two aces from Hanba and a block from Anthony and Jones.
- Vassar trimmed the advantage to 23-17 following a winner each from Kaplan, Lovett and Hale before a block from Bailey and Anthony and an ace from Cassi Wageman gave Utica the set win.
Fourth Set
- Utica earned a 6-4 lead to begin the set before Vassar took a 8-7 lead after a block from Gutierrez and McAusland and a winner from Gutierrez.
- The Brewers lead grew to 12-8 after two aces from McAusland and a block from Gutierrez and McAusland.
- Vassar's advantage grew to 16-10 following an ace from Miller and kills from Kaplan and Lovett.
- The Brewers cruised to the set victory on a winner from Medrano to send it to the deciding fifth set.
Fifth Set
- Both teams went back-and-forth to being the deciding set as Utica went ahead 8-6 after a Baker winner.
- After Bailey's kill put the Pioneers ahead 10-8, Vassar rallied for the final seven points of the set to win the match.
- Vassar used three winners from McAusland along with a kill each from Gutierrez and Anthony-Brumfield to seal the five-set victory.
For The Brewers
- Kaplan tallied a match-high 12 kills along with seven digs and two aces along with Gutierrez adding 10 kills, three blocks and three digs.
- McAusland finished with 10 kills, three aces, three blocks and 14 digs while Miller added eight kills, three aces and five digs.
- Hale added seven winners and four digs while Lovett recorded six kills.
- Anthony-Brumfield supplied five kills along with Medrano registered three kills, 22 assists, two aces and nine digs.
- Ardren handed out a career-high 33 assists along with four aces and nine digs.
- Junior Ellie Kogan lifted 13 digs while sophomore T Petro added 10 digs and an ace.
For The Pioneers
- Bailey led Utica with 11 kills, 10 digs and two blocks along with Hanba adding 10 kills, three aces and three digs.
- Jones finished an all-around day with seven kills, 21 assists, eight aces and 16 digs.
- Anthony tallied five kills, three blocks and four digs while O'Brien added five winners.
- Ancewicz registered 12 assists, two aces and five digs along with Megan Wright lifting a match-high 32 digs.
