Balanced Scoring Attack Leads Vassar Past Misericordia

Four Brewers scoring in double-figures

Poughkeepsie, NY – Senior Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) led four players in double-figures with a game-high 15 points as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team opened the 2024-25 season with an impressive 67-40 victory over Misericordia to begin the Hochberg Family Tip-Off Tournament.
 
At 1-0 Vassar advances to the Championship game of the tournament where it will take on William Paterson who was victorious against Ursinus on Friday.
 
First Half
  • Vassar opened the game up early on Friday, outscoring the Cougars 17-2 in the opening period.
  • The Brewers scored the first nine points of the game and did now allow a field goal until the 2:55 mark of the opening stanza.
  • Vassar closed the first period with the final six points, including a Caroline Siekman (Islesboro, ME) bucket in the closing seconds of the quarter to put Vassar up 17-2.
  • Vassar continued its strong start in the second stanza, scoring 14 of the first 16 points to open a 27-4 lead on a Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) bucket with 4:28 left before halftime.
  • After Misericordia got a bucket from Emily Romanowski, the Brewers closed the half on an 8-0 run to open a 39-6 lead at the intermission.
  • Vassar shot an even 40-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, but went just 1-for-9 from three-point range.
  • Misericordia was limited to 3-for-31 shooting in the first half and 0-for-6 from behind the arc.
 
Second Half
  • Vassar did not allow its lead to slip below 32 points in the third quarter and spread its advantage to a game-high 53-13 on a Siekman conversion with 3:53 left in the quarter.
  • The Brewers held a lead as large as 39 points in the fourth frame, grabbing a 65-26 edge on a Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) bucket with 6:17 left to play.
  • Misericordia scored the final 11 points of the tilt to pull to within the final 27-point decision.
  • Vassar shot 40.7-percent after halftime and went 1-for-9 from three-point range over the final two quarters.
  • The Cougars converted at 56.3-percent from the floor in the final frame and finished the second half shooting 41.9-percent.
 
For The Brewers
  • Gelb went 4-for-10 from the floor with a three-pointer to go along with a 6-for-9 effort from the free-throw line on the way to a game-high 15 points. Gelb finished the strong night with six rebounds, three blocks and a trio of steals.
  • Harvey scored 13 points and led the team with nine rebounds.
  • McDermed chipped in 12 points, going 5-for-8 from the floor, five rebounds and a team-high three assists.
  • Siekman came off the bench to finish with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting to go along with seven boards.
  • Emery Mullen (Charlton, MA) hauled in four rebounds and blocked three shots.
  • Bella Tawney (Simsbury, CT) chipped in five points and five rebounds.
 
For The Cougars
  • Samantha Casey led the Cougars with eight points on 4-for-12 shooting.
  • Romanowski tallied five points and led the team with three assists.
  • Alina Torchia hauled in a team-high five rebounds and added two assists.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot 40.4-percent from the floor overall despite a 2-for-18 effort from three-point range.
  • Misericordia converted at 25.8-poercent overall and went 3-for-14 from behind the arc.
  • The Brewers held a 19-5 advantage in scoring from the free-throw line.
  • The Brewers finished the contest with a 26-18 edge in paint scoring.
  • Fast break points went to the Brewers 10-2.
 
What's Next
  • Vassar will tussle with William Paterson in the championship game of the Hochberg Family Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
  • Misericordia will meet Ursinus in the consolation game at 2:00 p.m.
