Balanced Scoring Leads Men's Basketball to Triumph Over Sarah Lawrence

Brewers shoot 60-percent in the first half, 10 different players score

Bronxville, NY - 10 different players recorded a made field goal to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Vassar College Men's Basketball team in a 81-66 road victory over Sarah Lawrence in non-conference action on Saturday evening. Sophomore Shea Fitzgerald led the way with 19 points as the Brewers improve to 2-1 overall while the Gryphons fall to 1-3 on the season.

First Half
  • Following Eamon Kelly's opening bucket for Sarah Lawrence, Vassar went on a 9-2 run behind four points from sophomore Shea Fitzgerald and a lay-in each from sophomores Eric Zhang and Kreekor Karageuzian.
  • Anthony Arrufo's jumper evened the game at nine at the 14:40 mark before a triple from sophomore Avery Lee and a driving layup from Fitzgerald pushed the lead to five.
  • Back-to-back triples from Kelly and a bucket from Derek Hickman pushed the Gryphons ahead 17-14 until Vassar countered with three-pointers from junior JP Miranda and senior Luke Adams to regain a 22-19 lead with 9:39 left in the half.
  • Following a lauyp from junior Nathan Denham to keep a 25-23 lead, Kelly buried consecutive threes to take a 29-25 advantage with six minutes remaining in the opening period.
  • Lemar Fulmore's driving layup put Sarah Lawrence ahead 31-28 until the Brewers responded with an old fashioned three-point play from Fitzgerald and a three-pointer from Adams to take a 34-31 lead with 3:31 remaining in the half.
  • Vassar closed the second half on a 14-2 run behind six points from Fitzgerald and four from sophomore Sebastian Medina to carry a 48-33 lead into the halftime break.
  • The Brewers shot a blistering 60-percent from the field in the first half, including five three-pointers, and were 7-for-10 from the free throw line.
  • Sarah Lawrence finished the opening 20 minutes shooting 42.4-percent overall, going 5-for-12 from three, and only attempted one free throw.
Second Half
  • Vassar's lead expanded to 17 points on a Medina bucket from Medina with 17:57 remaining and grew to 60-41 on a lay-in from Zhang two minutes later.
  • Back-to-back layups from Denham pushed the lead to a game-high 23 points with 14 minutes left in regulation before Sarah Lawrence clawed back to within 11 on a Fulmore lay-in with 10:23 to go.
  • Two free throws from Fitzgerald pushed the lead back to 13 points at 70-57 at the 8:46 mark as the Gryphons got within 11 again with six minutes left on two free throws from Kyle Jefferson.
  • A jumper from junior Sacha Greenberg and two more free throws from Fitzgerald expanded the advantage back to 15 points at 76-61 with five minutes to go.
  • Vassar's lead expanded to 81-65 with two minutes remaining on a lay-in from first year Will Gregory.
  • The Brewers cooled to 35.7-percent shooting from the field, making just one three-pointer, and went 12-for-14 from the free throw line.
  • The Gryphons were limited to 28.2-percent overall in the half, including 2-for-12 from three and connected on 9-for-12 from the free throw line.
For The Brewers
  • Fitzgerald tallied 19 points (5-for-12 shooting, 8-for-8 from the free throw line), five assists and two steals while Lee recorded 13 points and eight rebounds.
  • Karageuzian finished with eight points, nine boards and three assists along with Medina adding eight points, six rebounds and two assists.
  • Adams knocked down three threes and added two assists and three boards while Zhang chipped in eight points.
  • Denham registered seven points and two boards along with three points and two steals from Miranda.
For The Gryphons
  • Kelly poured in a game-high 29 points on 10-for-15 shooting and 5-for-7 from three-point distance.
  • Fulmore tallied eight points, four assists and two steals along with Braden Burman adding seven points and two boards.
  • Andrew Kim finished with four points, six rebounds and three steals while Aiden Morel chipped in four points, two assists and four rebounds.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar held a 17-10 edge in points off turnovers and outscored Sarah Lawrence 38-28 in points in the paint.
  • Second chance points were even at eight while the Brewers held a 20-2 advantage in fast break points.
