Brewers Battle To Draw At #18 William Smith

Shea matches career-high save total

Geneva, NY – The Vassar College Women's Soccer team took to the road Saturday afternoon and played #18 William Smith to a scoreless draw. First Year goalkeeper Laura Shea (Swarthmore, PA) matched her career-high save total in the contest, stopping seven shots.
 
Saturday's draw moves Vassar to 7-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in Liberty League play, while the Herons stand at 6-3-3 overall and 2-1-2 in league contests. Saturday's draw is the third straight meeting with William Smith that has ended without a goal.
 
How It Happened
  • William Smith closed the first half with a 10-2 advantage in shots, but put just one attempt on frame before the break.
  • There were no corner kicks taken prior to halftime.
  • Shea and her counterpart from William Smith, Kirsten Nelson, each made a single save to keep the opposition off the board.
  • Vassar came out of the break with three consecutive shots on goal with Alice Crowley (St. Louis, MO), Riley McGrath (Coronado, CA) and Madison Bouggess (Swedesboro, NJ) all testing Nelson over the first 3:20 of the second frame.
  • Shea was busy after halftime, totaling six stops, including one in the final five minutes to keep to game scoreless.
  • Nelson finished the second frame with four saves for the Herons.
  • William Smith held an 11-5 shot advantage after halftime.
  • William Smith closed the second half with a slim 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
 
For The Brewers
  • Shea earned her second career shutout and made seven saves in a game for the second time this season.
  • Shea lowered her goals against average to 0.50 and raised her save percentage to .895 with Saturday's performance.
  • Bouggess led the Brewers with four shots, putting two on frame.
  • Crowley, McGrath and Diana Loera (Chula Vista, CA) each posted a shot on goal.
For The Herons
  • Nelson earned the shutout with five saves on Saturday.
  • Moira van der Putt led the Herons with four shots, including three on goal.
 
Game Statistics
  • William Smith outshot Vassar 21-7 overall in the game, but just 8-5 in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks went to the Herons 2-1.
