Poughkeepsie, NY – Four players scored in double-figures, including 16 points apiece from
Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) and
Caroline Siekman (Islesboro, ME), as the Vassar College Women's Basketball team overcame a sluggish start for a 70-42 home win over Clarkson, its 10
th consecutive triumph.
Saturday's victory improves Vassar to 11-1 overall on the season and to 5-0 in Liberty League play, while Clarkson dips to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in league play.
First Half
- The visitors jumped out to a 9-1 advantage on Saturday and held Vassar without a field goal until the 4:06 mark of the first quarter.
- Cassidy Dumont seven of the team's first nine points, including a three-pointer at the 6:29 mark of the opening stanza to give Clarkson its largest lead of the game at 9-1.
- Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) recorded the Brewers's first field goal, a layup that started an 8-0 spurt that included three-pointers from Harvey and Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) to knot the score at 9-9.
- Vassar grabbed its first lead of the game when Gelb converted a three-point play to push the Brewers in front 12-10 before a Siekman jumper sent Vassar into the second stanza with a 14-10 advantage.
- The Brewers scored the first six points of the second period to open a 20-10 lead on a Gelb bucket just under three minutes into the quarter.
- Harvey canned another three-pointer at the midway point of the quarter to move the Brewers in front 25-14.
- Siekman closed out the first quarter scoring with a conversion in the paint that gave Vassar a 29-18 advantage heading into halftime.
- Vassar finished the first half shooting 32.4-percent from the floor and 3-for-8 from three-point range.
- Clarkson was held to 2-for-11 shooting in the second frame and closed the opening 20 minutes converting at 26.1-percent overall and 1-for-10 from behind the arc.
Second Half
- Vassar got back-to-back three-pointers from Harvey and Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) coming out of halftime to open a 35-18 advantage.
- The lead ballooned to 38-20 on another Harvey triple with 7:16 left in the third quarter.
- The Vassar lead reached 20-points, at 47-27, on a Siekman bucket at the 3:37 mark and reached 53-29 when Siekman converted another layup in the final half minute of the third frame.
- A Naiya Kurnik (Fallbrook, CA) three-pointer early in the final frame pushed Vassar in front 60-35.
- Siekman added back-to-back conversions in the middle stages of the fourth quarter to give Vassar a 66-36 lead with just under four minutes left to play.
- The Brewers matched the game-high 30-point lead on two other occasions with Sophia Ippolito (Cumberland Center, ME) pushed the Brewers in front 68-38 with a layup at the 3:16 mark and Margo Gramiak (Wilmington, DE) making a layup at the 1:32 mark to give Vassar a 70-40 lead.
- After struggling from the field in the first half, Vassar shot 62.5-percent from the floor in the third quarter and 56.3-percent over the final 20 minutes.
- Vassar went a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point range in the third frame and made five triples in the second half.
For The Brewers
- Siekman scored a season-high 16 points on 8-for-14 shooting and closed a strong all-around game with six rebounds and a pair of assists.
- Harvey reached double-figures for the 10th time in 12 games with 16 points on 6-for-13 shooting that included a 4-for-6 effort from long range.
- Gelb narrowly missed a triple-double on Saturday, totaling 11 points and game-highs of 10 rebounds and eight assists.
- Kurnik scored in double-figures for the sixth time this season, contributing 10 points to go along with four boards and three assists.
For The Golden Knights
- Dumont led all scorers in the game with 18 points after going 8-for-13 from the field with a pair of three-pointers.
- Raelin Burns chipped in 12 points on the strength of a 3-for-5 effort from the field.
- Bella Doyla led the team with seven rebounds, adding two blocks and four points.
- Addie Kae handed out a team-high four assists and hauled in four rebounds.
Game Statistics
- Vassar finished the day shooting 43.9-percent overall and shot a season-high 50-percent from three-point range after going 8-for-16 from behind the arc.
- Vassar turned the ball over a season-low eight times and assisted on 26 of its 29 made field goals.
- Clarkson was held to 31.9-percent shooting overall and went 2-for-18 from three-point range.
- Clarkson outscored Vassar 10-4 from the free-throw line.
- Vassar finished the day with a 21-4 advantage in points off of turnovers.
- The Brewers outscored Clarkson 32-22 in the paint.
