Men's Basketball Falls to the Garnet Chargers in Road Action

Miranda and Lee each tally 22 points for the Brewers

SCHENECTADY, NY - The Vassar College Men's Basketball returned to action in the midst of a seven game road trip on Friday evening as the Brewers fell 86-76 to conference foe Union College at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Brewers fall to 6-10 overall and 4-5 in conference action while the Garnet Chargers improve to 8-7 on the season and 3-6 in Liberty League play.

FIRST HALF
  • Following a lay-in from Edward Baptiste to open the game for Union, the Brewers scored the next nine in a row, including a three-pointer from sophomore JP Miranda along with buckets from senior Logan Scott, junior Luke Adams and first year Sebastian Medina.
  • Back-to-back layups from sophomore Nathan Denham followed by a jumper from classmate Sacha Greenberg put Vassar ahead 17-7 with 12:30 remaining.
  • A layup from Connor Cepiel and a jumper from Lemar Fulmore trimmed the advantage down to 23-16 with 7:36 to go before Miranda canned a triple to push the lead back to double digits with just over seven minutes remaining.
  • Union responded with an 8-2 run over the next two minutes to cut the lead to 28-24 with 4:59 to go, led by four points from Aren Cummings.
  • Matthew Garside knocked down a three-pointer at the 2:35 mark to bring the Garnet Chargers within two before Garside made two free throws to tie the game at 32 with 1:42 left in the half.
  • Sophomore Avery Lee drilled a triple with 29 seconds left before Jack Plesser's putback right before the horn cut Vassar's halftime lead to 35-34.
  • Vassar concluded the opening half shooting 48.4-percent while going 3-for-11 from deep and 2-for-2 from the free throw line.
  • Union finished the first half shooting 37.1-percent overall, including 4-for-12 from three-point range, and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
SECOND HALF
  • Cummings' layup with 18:16 remaining gave the Garnet Chargers its first lead since the first minute of the first half followed by a Tedesco jumper pushing the lead to three at the 17:03 mark.
  • Union's lead grew to nine on a three-pointer from Tedesco with 14:37 remaining before a three from Garside pushed the Garnet Chargers ahead by double digits with 12:26 to go.
  • Miranda's four point play put the Brewers within six with 12 minutes remaining until Union expanded its lead to 61-51 on a lay-in from Plesser at the 9:20 mark.
  • Seven straight points from Lee got Vassar within seven with 6:02 left but the Garnet Chargers countered with a three-pointer from Garside to extend the lead back to double digits.
  • Lee once again cut the Union advantage to single digits at the 5:08 mark until Garside connected on another triple to put Union ahead 73-62.
  • Five consecutive points from Lee put the Brewers within six with 1:20 remaining as Union hit two free throws to send it under a minute to go.
  • Lee cashed in another three-pointer to cut the advantage to 81-76 but the Brewers couldn't get closer in the final stages.
  • Vassar finished the second half shooting 48.5-percent overall, including 3-for-9 from three, and shot 6-for-10 from the free throw stripe.
  • Union shot a blistering 56.7-percent from the field, finishing 6-for-13 from three-point range, and 12-for-15 from the free throw line.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Miranda tallied 22 points on 8-for-12 from the field and also added four rebounds and three assists. Lee recorded 22 points off the bench on 8-for-16 overall and added six boards.
  • Denham registered 10 points and four steals while Adams and Medina each chipped in six points.
  • Senior Logan Scott finished with four points, five rebounds and a block.
FOR THE GARNET CHARGERS
  • Garside finished with 18 points, three assists and three boards along with Tedesco adding 15 points, six assists and five rebounds.
  • Cepiel tallied 14 points, three assists and three rebounds while Cummings recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 boards.
  • Christian Dufort registered eight points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two assists.
GAME STATS
  • The Brewers finished the game shooting 48.4-percent from the field and converted six three-pointers while the Garnet Chargers shot 46.2-percent overall and knocked down 10 three-pointers.
  • Union outscored Vassar by eight at the free throw line along with a 13-7 edge in second chance points and 14-13 advantage in points off turnovers.
  • The Brewers held a 46-30 edge in points in the paint.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar makes the short trip to local conference foe Bard for a 4:00 p.m. matchup.
  • Union will play host to RPI on Tuesday evening.
