#6 Men's Volleyball Cruises to Season-Opening Sweep of Adrian

Brewers will take on ranked foes UC Santa Cruz and Cal Lutheran tomorrow afternoon

THOUSAND OAKS, CA - The #6 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team opened the 2024 season on Friday evening at the CLU Invitational as the Brewers earned a 25-22, 25-20, 25-15 sweep over Adrian in the opening match of the CLU Invitational. The Brewers open the season 1-0 overall while the Bulldogs fall to 0-1 on the season.

FIRST SET
  • Adrian took an early 5-2 lead following kills from Chase Heuer, Carson Bell and Beck Fieldhouse.
  • Vassar drew within one at 6-5 on a winner from junior Tobias Clark before another kill from Heuer pushed the Bulldogs ahead 9-7.
  • Following an ace from sophomore Tristan Christofferson and an Adrian error, Vassar took its first lead at 10-9.
  • Adrian regained the lead at 12-11 on a winner from Andrew Gawrisch and then again at 13-12 on a kill from Bell.
  • Vassar responded by taking the next five points as two kills from senior Jacob Kim forced an Adrian timeout at 17-13.
  • The Bulldogs got within one at 17-16 on an ace from Gawrisch before Vassar answered with an ace from Kim and a Clark kill to push its lead to 20-17.
  • Kim's kill put the Brewers ahead 23-20 followed by a kill from Clark to take the opening set 25-22.
SECOND SET
  • Vassar jumped out to an early 5-1 lead as Kim and Clark each tallied winners along with an ace from senior Andrew Guaragno.
  • The Bulldogs cut the lead down to 7-5 on an ace from Gawrisch before Vassar built its lead back to 14-10 on a kill from Kim.
  • Adrian tied the set up at 17 following a kill from Heuer and an ace from Micah Low.
  • The Brewers responded with five straight points, led by two kills from Kim, one from junior Billy Fan and a solo block from junior Gavin Akoto, to force a Bulldogs timeout at 22-17.
  • Heuer buried back-to-back kills for the Bulldogs to cut the lead to three until Vassar took the final two points of the set, winning the set 25-20 on an ace from first year Parker Schoenl.
THIRD SET
  • The Brewers raced out to a 6-1 lead following a kill from Kim followed by a winner and ace from Guaragno.
  • Adrian trimmed the lead down to 7-4 on a winner from Fieldhouse before three straight points from Vassar, including a kill from first year Armaan Desai, pushed the Brewers ahead 10-4.
  • A triple block from Desai, Guaragno and first year Enzo Bertini along with an ace from Desai and two kills from Guaragno extended the Vassar lead to 15-7.
  • The lead ballooned to 19-9 following an ace from Guaragno and a kill from first year Walter Birnbaum.
  • Four of the next five points, including kills from Fieldhouse and Heuer along with an ace from Carlos Baza, trimmed the Vassar lead to 20-14.
  • Sophomore Cannon Tucker landed a service ace followed by a match-clinching ace from Desai to earn a three-set sweep.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Kim finished the match with a match-high 11 kills along with eight assists, six digs, an ace and a block.
  • Clark tallied six kills, three assists and two digs along with senior Vaughn Ramsey recording four kills and two blocks.
  • Guaragno added four kills, three aces and four digs while senior AJ Erickson handed out a team-high 10 assists and lifted six digs.
FOR THE BULLDOGS
  • Heuer recorded a team-best 10 kills while Fieldhouse tallied four winners.
  • Bell finished with three kills while Gawrisch recorded three kills, a match-high 13 assists, two aces and six digs.
  • Zach Molnar added three kills along with Jacob Rembulat lifted a match-high 10 digs.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar takes on #14-T UC Santa Cruz and #12 Cal Lutheran tomorrow afternoon in the final day of the CLU Invitational.
  • Adrian will also square off with the Banana Slugs and the Kingsmen tomorrow.
