McGrath, Panarelli net two goals each

Poughkeepsie, NY – Riley McGrath (Coronado, CA) and Gigi Panarelli (Jensen Beach, FL) each scored two goals and Rebecca Rodriguez (Santa Barbara, CA) assisted on two tallies as the Vassar College Women's Soccer team pulled away for a 5-0 non-conference win over Sarah Lawernce on Wednesday.
 
Wednesday's victory pushes Vassar to 2-1 overall on the season with the Gryphons dropping to 1-1 through their first two tilts of the season.
 
How It Happened
  • The first half featured just one goal with Panarelli picking up her first career tally in the 36th minute. She carried the ball from just inside midfield and unleashed a shot to the top right corner for the eventual game winning goal at 35:28.
  • Despite scoring only once, Vassar finished the first half with a 9-1 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
  • The Brewers pulled away in the second half, scoring four times just over 26 minutes apart.
  • Panarelli found the back of the net for the second time, finishing off a pass from Maddie Wolf (Mars, PA), at 50:56 to give Vassar a 1-0 advantage.
  • The lead grew to 3-0 in the 68th minute when Madison Bouggess (Swedesboro, NJ) found the back of the net for the second time in 2023.
  • Following the Bouggess marker, McGrath closed out the scoring with her second and third goals of the season just 67 seconds apart.
  • The first goal came after a restart when Rodriguez touched a ball to the top of the box that McGrath buried at 75:40.
  • The final goal of the night came off a passing play started by Bouggess on the right wing and completed by Rodriguez who found McGrath for her second of the game at 76:47.
  • Vassar controlled the second half, outshooting Sarah Lawrence 14-1 and taking three of the four corner kicks after halftime.
 
For The Brewers
  • McGrath moved into the team lead in goals with three on the season following the two-goal performance.
  • Bouggess picked up her second three-point game in three outings on Wednesday and moved into a tie for the team lead in points with six.
  • Panarelli found the scoring column for the first time in her career and picked up her first multiple goal game and first career game winning goal.
  • Wolf collected her first career point with a helper on Panarelli's second marker.
  • Rodriguez moved into a tie for first on the team in assists after helping on Vassar's final two goals of the night.
  • Teresa Zimmer (Long Valley, NJ) picked up her first shutout of the season, stopping one shot in on the night.
 
For The Gryphons
  • Viktoria Balbin and Katy Beaver recorded the only shots for the visitors, with Beaver putting a shot on target.
  • Maya Pfeiffer went the full 90 minutes in goal for Sarah Lawrence, turning aside eight shots in the game.
 
Match Statistics
  • Vassar held a convincing 23-2 advantage in overall shots and a 13-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks went to the Brewers 7-1.
  • Fouls in the contest were even at nine per side.
