Madison, NJ – The Vassar College Men's Tennis team opened the three-day ITA Northeast Regional on Friday in strong fashion. The Brewers took two of the three doubles matches they competed in and scored a trio of singles wins on Day One of the event.
Doubles
- The Brewers' top duo of Nolan Kubiak (Neenah, WI) and Ethan Mantell (Hermosa Beach, CA), who are seeded fourth in the main doubles draw, cruised to an 8-3 victory over their opponents from St. Lawrence.
- Jay Wong (Hong Kong) and Eugene Lee (Chico, CA) competed in the doubles draw on Friday and posted an impressive 8-1 victory over their opposition from Baruch.
- The third Vassar pair in action on Friday was Pedro Cattaruzzi (Chatham, NJ) and Benjamin Almquist (Union Pier, MI), who suffered a tough 8-7 (6) defeat to their opponents from Juniata.
Singles
- In the main singles draw, the Brewers had two players seeded 9-16 in Almquist and Wong.
- Almquist scored an 8-1 victory over Alejandro Pacheco from Ramapo on Friday.
- Wong blanked Bobby Ciarletta from Ramapo 8-0 to open singles play in the tournament.
- Henry Zhang (Zhengzhou, China) also scored a singles win for Vassar on Friday, easing to an 8-0 win.
- Lee and Mantell each fell in competitive contests on Friday, with Lee falling 8-6 and Mantell dropping an 8-7 (5) heartbreaker.
