Women's Volleyball Sweeps Skidmore

Kaplan buries 17 kills for Vassar in the win

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team completed a 25-17, 25-19, 25-15 sweep of the Skidmore Thoroughbreds on the road on Saturday afternoon in Liberty League action. The Brewers improve to 6-6 overall and 1-1 in conference play while Skidmore falls to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in Liberty League contests.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • FIRST SET
    • Vassar took an early 5-2 lead in the opening set as sophomore Rebecca Gutierrez and first year Maura McAusland buried kills before back-to-back aces from Noa Berger tied it at five.
    • Two kills from first year Holland Kaplan along with a winner from junior Morgan Miller helped spur the Brewers to an 11-7 lead.
    • Skidmore cut the lead down to three at 14-11 before Vassar scored four straight points, including winners from McAusland and Kaplan, go move its lead up to 18-11.
    • The Thoroughbreds trimmed the lead down to six before kills from McAusland, junior Julia Hale and sophomore Melia Voss clinched the first set.
  • SECOND SET
    • Skidmore held a 5-2 lead in the opening points as kills from Rudi Reyes and Carolyn Scott along with an ace from Jo Blanco gave the Thoroughbreds the early edge.
    • Vassar drew even at six on a winner from McAusland before taking a 9-6 lead after a kill from Voss and a block from Kaplan and Hale.
    • Both teams traded points to make it 18-16 before Vassar scored four straight on two winners from Kaplan and two aces from first year T Petro.
    • A block from Jazlin Chen and Ella Harris cut the lead to five before junior Hailey Hayes' kill took the second set for the Brewers/
  • THIRD SET
    • Vassar stormed out to a 7-1 lead to open the set as McAusland notched two kills and two blocks along with winners from Hale and Kaplan.
    • The Brewers advantage grew to 14-5 on a solo block from Voss and a kill from Kaplan to force a Skidmore timeout.
    • Skidmore cut the lead down to 19-13 on a kill from Scott but a winner each from Kaplan and Hayes along with a Kaplan ace completed the sweep for Vassar.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Kaplan led the Brewers in kills with 17 and added five digs while McAusland registered 10 winners and four blocks.
  • Hale finished with five kills and four blocks along with Hayes recording four kills and five digs.
  • Voss handed out 35 assists along with three blocks and 10 digs.
  • Sophomore Ellie Kogan lifted 10 digs and junior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield recorded three blocls.
FOR THE THOROUGHBREDS
  • Scott finished with a team-high eight kills while Chen tallied five kills and three blocks.
  • Harris registered two kills and three blocks along with Catriona Hoelperl finishing with 10 assists and 12 digs.
  • Blanco lifted eight digs and Athena Braverman added six digs.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar returns home for a tri-match on Saturday as the Brewers will host Liberty League foe William Smith and the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
  • Skidmore hosts Middlebury in non-league action on Tuesday evening.
