Women’s Soccer Kicks-Off 2023 Season Against Mount Saint Vincent, NYU

Brewers begin third season under Keith Simons Friday

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Soccer team begins its third season under Head Coach Keith Simons on Friday when it plays host to the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Gordon Field before taking to the road for the first time on Sunday to take on New York University. Live Stats and Video will be made available for both contests for those unable to attend.
 
At A Glance
  • Vassar posted an 8-5-5 overall record and a 4-2-3 mark in Liberty League play in 2022, earning its seventh straight berth into the Liberty League Championship.
  • The Brewers welcome back eight of their top nine point producers from the 2022 season, including Claire Karlin (Arlington, VA) who paced the team with six goals and 12 points on her way to being named Second Team All-Conference.
  • Jessica Young (The Woodlands, TX) returns after a First Team All-Liberty League citation in 2022 and will serve as one of three team captains throughout the 2023 season. In addition to her Liberty League honor, Young was tabbed Academic All-District by the College Sports Communicators, a Scholar All-American by the United Soccer Coaches, All-Region by the United Soccer Coaches and an All-American by D3Soccer.com.
  • Teresa Zimmer (Long Valley, NJ) made all 18 starts in goal for the Brewers in 2022 and was named Honorable Mention All-Liberty League along with Noelle Namba (San Francisco, CA) who potted a pair of goals.
  • The Brewers will need to replace the production, four goals and 10 points, from Violet Munnelly who was named First Team All-League and Second Team All-Region in 2022.
Captains
  • Three Brewers have been selected by the coaching staff as team captains for the 2023 season with the leadership group consisting of Olivia Lavelle (Scottsdale, AZ), Young and Zimmer.
 
Forward/Midfield
  • The Brewers welcome back 11 players from last year's squad who played either up front or in the midfield headlined by Karlin and Young.
  • Karlin appeared in 15 games for Vassar, leading the team with six markers, while Young started all 18 tilts in 2022, potting two goals and leading field players with 1,454 minutes played.
  • Madison Bouggess (Swedesboro, NJ) made 18 appearances a season ago for the Brewers, totaling nine points with Riley McGrath (Coronado, CA) coming off a two-goal, six-point season as a first year.
  • Namba and Ariana Pjetri (Yorktown Heights, NY) each tallied twice in 2022 for Vassar while Justine Tapert (New York, NY) paced the squad with four assists on the year.
  • Vassar will also lean on the experience of returners Lavelle, who was limited by injury in 2022, London Wilkes (Santa Monica, CA), Livy Soble (Pleasanton, CA), Rebecca Rodriguez (Santa Barbara, CA) and Lucy Getzin (Ithaca, NY) in 2023.
  • A pair of newcomers will look to make an immediate impact for the Brewers starting on Friday in Grace Romano (Bordentown, NJ) and Gigi Panarelli (Jensen Beach, FL). Romano joins the Brewers after a four-year varsity career at Princeton Day in which she scored 27 goals, while Panarelli had a successful two-year varsity career at Jensen Beach High School.
 
Defense/Midfield
  • Including Young; Simons and the Brewers welcome back eight returners from the 2022 season who anchored the back line or saw time in the midfield.
  • Ashley Butler (Hopkinton, MA) appeared in 18 games, including 10 starts as a first year, and totaled three points for the Brewers with Lindsey Nihei (Honolulu, HI) playing in 17 contests a season ago.
  • Julia Farnham (Amherst, MA) logged 1,361 minutes in 18 games played in 2022 with Cating Greene (Providence, RI) playing 1,144 minutes in 18 starts.
  • Lily Brigman (Mebane, NC) looks for an increased role in the back after playing in four games as a first year with Allie Foote (West Chester, PA) and Riley Lipman (Westport, CT) returning after missing the 2022 season due to injury.
  • Jessica Bowman (Larchmont, NY) joins the fold after playing her first collegiate season at Division I Portland where she appeared in 10 games. Bowman's prep career at Mamaroneck included All-League, All-Section and All-State citations as a senior in 2021.
  • Alex Astalos (Tarzana, CA), Maddie Wolf (Mars, PA) and Cecelia Wager (Brookline, MA) all join the squad as first years in 2023.
  • Astalos played four years with the varsity during her high school career where she was named All-Mission and All-CIF Southern Section in 2022-23.
  • Wolf was a three-year varsity player at Mars Area High School where her team on the State Championship three times.
  • Wager joins the Brewers after an All-State career at Brookline High School in both soccer and track and field.
 
Goalkeepers
  • Zimmer headlines the goalkeeper group in 2023 after a standout season a year ago. Zimmer, who earned All-Liberty League Honorable Mention honors in 2022, started all 18 contests in goal and played 1,564:08 while working to a 0.58 goals against average and a .783 save percentage. Zimmer added nine shutouts and finished the year with 36 saves.
  • Zimmer closed the 2022 season ranked second in the Liberty League in goals against average and seventh in save percentage while pacing the league in total shutouts.
  • Julia Reigrut (Lone Tree, CO) saw action in a pair of games in 2022, totaling just shy of 56 minutes worth of work.
  • Bella Stevens (Ann Arbor, MI) joins the group for the 2023 season after a soccer and softball career at Community High School.
Head Coach
  • Keith Simons is set to mentor the Brewers for the third season as head coach and has put together a 17-12-6 overall record and an 8-6-4 mark against Liberty League rivals over the previous two seasons.
  • Prior to the start of the 2023 campaign, Simons elevated Shaela Krayer to Associate Head Coach.
 
The Schedule
  • A challenging non-conference schedule features three of the first four games of the season at home, starting with the season opener against the Dolphins on Friday.
  • Following a trip to NYU on Sunday, the Brewers play host to 2022 Skyline Conference Champion Sarah Lawrence on September 6 and Scranton on September 9.
  • Vassar welcomes Montclair State to Gordon Field on September 16 between road non-conference contests at Western Connecticut (9/13) and Wesleyan (9/19).
  • Liberty League play opens with a home tilt against Union on September 23 with league rivals William Smith (10/7), RPI (10/25) and RIT (10/28) also making the trip to Poughkeepsie.
  • The Brewers will take to the road for league games at Bard (9/27), Skidmore (9/30), St. Lawrence (10/13), Clarkson (10/14) and defending Liberty League Champion, Ithaca (10/21).
  • The Liberty League Championship commences on Halloween with the First Round and continues with the Semifinals on November 3 and the Championship Final on November 5.
