Box Score Danbury, CT – The Vassar College Men's Soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 3-1 road non-conference loss at Western Connecticut Friday afternoon.
Owen Fauth (Keene, NH) tallied the lone goal for the Brewers in the loss.
Friday's drops the Brewers to 0-1 through the initial contest of the season, while the Wolves jump to 1-0 in the early going.
How It Happened
- Western Connecticut scored the first two goals of the contest just under 10 minutes apart in the first half.
- Chance Campbell broke through with the game's first marker off a feed from Nikolas Chevres at 13:00 before Eduardo Vargas doubled the advantage at 22:09 with his first goal of the campaign.
- The Wolves' carried a 2-0 lead into the intermission after outshooting Vassar 8-5 in the opening 45 minutes.
- First half corner kicks were even at three per side.
- Fauth cut the Brewers' deficit in half early in the second frame with his first tally of the year. He got Vassar on the board at 49:03.
- The Brewers stayed within a shot until the 88th minute when Daniel Russo finished off his first goal of the season at 87:40 to give the Wolves the final 3-1 advantage.
- Vassar outshot Western Connecticut 5-2 in the second half, but could only find the one marker.

- Fauth, who led the Brewers with nine markers in 2022, scored his first of 2023 on his only attempt of the game.
- Kinlay Watkins (Berkeley, CA) led the Brewers with three shots in the game.
- Duncan Keker (Oakland, CA) unleashed two shots for the Brewers, recording one shot on goal.
- Patrick Gale (San Antonio, TX) made his first career start in goal for Vassar, rounding out the contest with a pair of saves.
For The Wolves
- Cambell, Vargas and Russo all found the back of the net for Western Connecticut, with Vargas potting the eventual game winning goal.
- Russo and Filipe Dutra each led the team with a pair of shots.
- Zachary Benson made the start in goal and earned the win with two first half saves.
