Vassar Takes On Western Connecticut, Mount Saint Mary To Open 2023 Season

Brewers coming off Second Round NCAA appearance in 2022

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The Vassar College Men's Soccer team begins the 2023 season with a pair of non-conference games this week, traveling to Western Connecticut to open the season on Friday before welcoming local foe Mount Saint Mary College to Gordon Field for the home opener on Sunday. Live Stats and Video will be provided for both contests for those unable to attend.
 
Quick Hitters
  • Vassar finished the 2022 season with a 9-3-7 overall record and an unbeaten 5-0-4 mark in Liberty League play in its first season under Jonathan Hood, PH.D.
  • The Brewers earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Second Round for the first time since 2012.
  • Vassar returns nine of its top-10 point producers from the 2022 season.
  • Four All-Liberty League performers are back for Vassar in 2023, including First Team picks Owen Fauth (Keane, NH) and Duncan Keker (Oakland, CA) as well as Second Team selections Nolan Alexander (New York, NY) and Danny Berry (Haskell, NJ).
  • In addition to the All-League citations, Fauth, Keker and Berry all earned All-Regions honors with Second Team accolades going to Fauth and Keker and a Third Team nod going to Berry.
  • Off the field, Fauth was named a Scholar All-American by the United Soccer Coaches and Academic All-District by the College Sports Communicators.
 
Captains
  • Fauth and fellow senior Kyle Lopes (El Dorado Hills, CA) will serve as the team captains for the 2023 season.
 
Forward/Midfield
  • Fauth and Keker highlight the returning scoring attack for the Brewers with Fauth producing team-highs in goals (9), assists (4) and points (22) a season ago. Keker checked in with eight goals and 16 points with each mark ranking second on the squad.
  • Jackson Hall (Washington, DC) is back after producing seven points in 16 games with Kinlay Watkins (Berkeley, CA) totaling five points on the strength of three assists and Jared Fiske (Livingston, NJ) potting and goal and helping on another in his first collegiate campaign.
  • Lopes closed out the 2022 season supporting the offense with a goal and an assist, while Diego Pastor-Valverde closed out his rookie season with a goal for the Brewers in 17 games played.
  • Teddy Borgos (Queensbury, NY.), Immanuel Clement-Sealey (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Sid Chatterjee (Oakland, CA), Colin Roche (Ridgewood, NJ) and Otis Wildman (Tampa, FL) all also return for the Brewers in 2023.
  • A talented group of newcomers enter the fold in 2023 with Jackson Allen (Chapel Hill, NC), Mauricio Mejia (Miami, FL) and Eli Torrey (Philadelphia, PA) all looking to make an immediate impact in 2023.
 
Midfield/Defense
  • Alexander and Berry headline the back for the Brewers following All-League showings last season. Berry finished the year fifth on the team in points while Alexander assisted on a pair of goals out of the back in 19 games played.
  • Liam Kleitz (Philadelphia, PA), Brandon Liu (Settle, WA), Charlie Rodhouse (Carmel Valley, CA) and Derek Sando (San Diego, CA) all supported the offense in 2022 with Sando potting two goals and Kleitz, Liu and Rodhouse all picking up assists.
  • Bevan Howard (Brooklyn, NY) and Julian Funaro (Pottstown, PA) each will look for increased rolls for the Brewers in 2023.
  • Newcomers Joseph Howard (Jamesburg, NJ) and Koray Tekin (Winter Park, FL) add their names to a talented backline for the Brewers in 2023.
 
Goalkeeper
  • Four goalkeepers will vie for time and look to replace the production from 2022 graduate and Second Team All-Liberty League pick Eric Wnorowski who posed a 0.77 goals against average and five shutouts in 2022.
  • Aidan Wisherd (Bedford, NH) was the only other keeper to see time last season, logging just over 25 minutes and combing on a pair of shutouts.
  • Vasilis Ganasoulis (Glen Head, NY) is back for his junior season with the Brewers in 2023.
  • Jacob Raphan (Oceanside, NY) joins the group following an All-County selection as a senior at Oceanside High School in 2022.
 
Head Coach
  • Hood returns for his second season on the sidelines in Poughkeepsie after leading Vassar to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 and the Second Round for the first time since 2012.
  • The 5-0-4 mark in conference play in 2022 marked the first time the Brewers had completed the Liberty League schedule without a loss.
 
The Schedule
  • Eight challenging non-conference games are featured on the 2023 schedule, with five of those contests being played on the road.
  • Non-conference games on the road include the season opener at Western Connecticut, Springfield (9/6), Brandies (9/9), Montclair State (916) and Drew (9/20).
  • Non-league home games include the home opener against Mount Saint Mary over Labor Day Weekend, New Paltz (9/13) and Middlebury (10/3).
  • Liberty League play commences on September 23 at Union and also includes road league games at Hobart (10/7), RPI (10/25) and RIT (10/28).
  • The home league slate begins with back-to-back games with Bard (9/27) and Skidmore (9/30).
  • A three-game conference home stands starts on October 13 against St. Lawrence and continues against Clarkson the following afternoon before the home regular season wraps up against Ithaca on October 21.
  • The Liberty League Championship opens on Halloween with the First Round and continues with the Semifinals on November 3 and the Chamoinship Final on November 5.
