POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Men's Lacrosse team fell in its regular season finale against #15 Union College, 14-9, on Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field. The Brewers conclude its season with a 7-9 overall and 0-7 in conference play while the Dutchmen improve to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in Liberty League action.
The opening quarter saw Union lead 2-1 as Archie McEvoy and Jake Mabardy each tallied a goal while freshman
Baker Morton found the back of the net for the Brewers in the first quarter.
Freshman
Anderson Eads tied it at two early in the second quarter before McEvoy scored his second goal of the game to put Union back in front. Freshmen
Luke DeRosa and
Nate Johnson scored back-to-back for Vassar as the Brewers took a 4-3 lead at the 8:20 mark. McEvoy tallied his third goal of the first half for Union to tie it at four heading into halftime.
Union scored the first four goals of the second half as Matt Blasi scored twice along with a goal each from Peter Kip and Clayton Arcuri. Sophomore
Shane O'Hara slowed the Dutchmen run on a goal on a feed from classmate
Drew Amirsakis until Union increased its lead to five at the end of three quarters on a goal apiece from Jake Titus and McEvoy.
The Brewers trimmed the lead down to two in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter as O'Hara tallied back-to-back goals along with Eads second of the game on a man-up goal. Union answered with three straight tallies as Zach Davis, Arcuri and Nolan Flood put the Dutchmen ahead 13-8 at the 4:33 mark. O'Hara scored his fourth goal of the game with just over two minutes left followed by Davis scoring his second goal of the quarter for Union.
O'Hara recorded four goals for Vassar while Eads scored twice and Johnson, DeRosa and Morton each tallied a goal. Senior
James Nicholas picked up three groundballs along with junior
Solomon Hess tallying three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Senior
Jack Bagin took the loss in the net as he made 14 saves for the Brewers.
McEvoy finished with four goals and five groundballs for Union while Davis, Arcuri and Balsi each scored two goals. Matthew Paolatto was 20-for-26 in faceoffs and picked up nine groundballs along with Jack Thompson having three caused turnovers and Justin Greene adding two caused turnovers. Dan Donahue earned the win in goal as he made 10 saves and picked up seven groundballs for the Dutchmen.
Vassar's season ends with a 7-9 record overall and Union earns the #3 seed in the Liberty League Championship.
