AUBURNDALE, FL - Led by an offensive onslaught of 26 runs, the Vassar College Baseball team collected a doubleheader sweep of Central College in the final two games of the RussMatt Invitational. The Brewers earned a 16-7 victory in the first game followed by a 10-8 win in the nightcap to improve to 6-5 overall.
VC 16 - CEN 7
The Dutch put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first as Colton DeRocher doubled to left center and then was driven in on a Declan O'Hare single. Garrett Finley's single through the middle scored O'Hare to take an early 2-0 advantage after one inning. Caleb Douglass led off the second with a double and was plated by a Colton Jones two-bagger to tack on a third run for Central.
Vassar answered with a big inning in the third as sophomore
Jaden Millstein drew a leadoff walk followed by a single from senior
Andrew Kanellis. Junior
Jack Silvera laced a single to center to score Millstein for the Brewers first run of the game. Senior
Ezra Caspi plated fellow senior
Adam Talwalkar on a double to the right center gap and was then scored on a knock from freshman
Jensen Bergman to tie the game at three. Vassar took the lead following a double steal from junior
Ty Murray and Bergman to go ahead 4-3 after three.
The Brewers put up another crooked number in the fourth as an infield single from sophomore
Birch Herring-Jackson, a Silvera walk and a Central error loaded the bases with two outs. Caspi came through again and lined a triple into right center to clear the bases and scored on a wild pitch in the next at-bat to take a 8-3 lead after four innings.
Vassar added on to its lead in the sixth as Talwalkar led off with a triple down the right field line and scored on a Dutch error. The Brewers pulled off another double steal to score a run, this time with Bergman and Caspi, and then Murray singled through the right side to plate Bergman to push the lead to 11-3. Kanellis knocked in two more runs with two outs on a double down the left field line to plate Murray and sophomore
Bradley Markind. Talwalkar's ground-rule double and Caspi's two RBI triple gave Vassar a 16-3 lead.
The Dutch tallied three runs in the sixth as pinch-hitter Logan Ammerman plated McCoy and DeRocher on a RBI single to left center and Chance Dreyer laced a double down the left field line to score Ammerman to make the score 16-6. Central added a run in the seventh on a wild pitch but Vassar closed the game out with a double play to take the game one victory.
Freshman
Addison Lee recorded his first collegiate win as he went five innings, allowing seven hits, three runs (two earned), two walks and struck out eight. Sophomore
Collin Donnelly tossed the final two innings in relief, giving up four hits, four runs (one earned), one walk and struck out three.
Caleb Evans took the loss for Central as he lasted three innings and allowed eight hits, four runs and walked one. Brendan Short threw a scoreless inning in relief for the Dutch.
Caspi finished a big day at the plate with three hits, three runs scored and six RBI. Bergman and Murray each recorded three hits while Bergman drove in two runs and scored twice. Kanellis and Talwalkar each added two hits while Kanellis drove in two for the Brewers. Douglass had three hits for the Dutch while Finley added two and Ammerman drove in a pair.
VC 10 - CEN 8
Vassar started the first inning with a crooked number as Millstein crushed a homer down the right field line to lead it off followed by a two RBI triple from Bergman to score Caspi and junior
Reid Lapekas to go ahead 3-0. Sophomore Matt Milano scored Bergman on a single and later scored on a wild pitch to put the Brewers up 5-0.
Colton Jones' bases loaded walk tallied the first run for the Dutch before sophomore starter
Luke Barrientos wiggled out of a jam with a strikeout in the second. Millstein added a run for Vassar in the bottom half of the second to score senior
Nick Greenhawt to push the lead back to five.
Central drew even in the fourth with a five run inning on a bases loaded hit by pitch, walk as well as a wild pitch. Finley's single down the left field line plated a pair and tied the game at six before junior reliever
Michael Came got a strikeout to end the frame.
Vassar answered with a four spot in the bottom of the fourth as Bergman stayed red hot with a single through the right side to score Kanellis. Talwalkar laced a pinch-hit single to the right center gap to score two more runs and Greenhawt's RBI groundout put Vassar ahead 10-6.
The Dutch got a two run homer from DeRocher in the top of the seventh with two outs to draw within two but Came got a groundout to third to clinch the doubleheader sweep.
Barrientos got the start for Vassar as he went three-plus innings and gave up two hits, six runs (five earned), six walks and struck out five. Came earned the win as he tossed 3.2 innings in relief and allowed two hits, two runs (zero earned) and struck out three.
Mark Kenney suffered the loss for the Dutch as he lasted three-plus innings, allowing nine hits, 10 runs, three walks and struck out one. Wes Hamor threw three scoreless innings in relief and struck out four.
Bergman led the way on offense for Vassar with a perfect 3-for-3 day and drove in three runs. Talwalkar added two RBI while Millstein blasted his first home run of the season. Finley finished with two hits and two runs drive for Central as DeRocher had a team-high three RBI.
The Brewers will return to action on Friday as they begin a three-game series with Gettysburg. First pitch against the Bullets is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
