POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - 14 different Brewers recorded a point as the Vassar College Men's Lacrosse team cruised to its fifth straight victory over Wheaton (Mass.) 21-9 on Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Field. Vassar improves to 5-1 overall while the Lyons drop to 4-2 on the season.
Wheaton got on the board first in the contest as Shane Ross scored on a feed from Robert Sullivan for the man-up goal before freshman
Baker Morton and
Nate Johnson scored back-to-back to take a 2-1 lead with 7:20 left. Charlie Racine fired one past the goalkeeper to tie it at two before another goal from Johnson and a coast-to-coast take from sophomore
Holden Anderson gave the Brewers a 4-2 lead after one quarter.
The Brewers scored five straight goals to start the second period as senior
Ryan Metz and O'Hara potted two goals each along with a tally from senior
James Nicholas to go ahead 9-2 with 7:45 remaining. Mike McLaughlin scored for the Lyons to close the half as Vassar held a 9-3 edge at the half.
Vassar started the second half on the man-up as junior
Troy Santise, Morton and O'Hara each scored goals to go ahead 12-3. Santise scored his second of the game at the 10:55 mark of the third quarter on a nice feed from rookie
Anderson Eads to make it a 10 goal advantage. Back-to-back goals from Ross and Nolan Caruso trimmed the lead down to eight until sophomore
Jack Rufa tallied two goals to push the lead to 16-5 with six and a half minutes left. Senior
Jon Bradbury's goal with four seconds left in the third gave the Brewers a 11 goal lead after three quarters of play.
Freshman
Hayden Stoltzfoos and senior
John Wapner each had a goal in the fourth quarter along with Bradbury's second tally as Vassar closed the contest with a 21-9 victory for its fifth straight victory.
O'Hara finished with four goals and an assist for Vassar while seven other Brewers tallied two goals each. Santise and Morton each recorded four points on the day while senior
Dillon Dierman had a game-high five caused turnovers and two ground balls. Junior
Solomon Hess tallied two caused turnovers and four ground balls along with Nicholas picking up six ground balls. Anderson finished 20-29 in faceoffs on the day and picked up a game-high seven ground balls. Senior
Jack Bagin took the win in goal with six saves in 45 minutes of action while sophomore
Drew Quinn made four saves in his quarter of action.
Ross and McLaughlin each finished with four points to lead Wheaton while Ross added two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Racine potted two goals and had a game-high eight ground balls. Jacob Wharton added two caused turnovers and four ground balls along with Tiago Paula Santos picking up four ground balls. John Drew took the loss in net and made 12 saves.
Vassar will return to action on Wednesday as they make the short trip to Newburgh to take on Mount Saint Mary. Face-off with the Knights is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
