Women's Basketball Coasts to Sixth Straight Victory Over Bard

12 different Brewers score in the victory

ANNADALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Vassar College Women's Basketball team cruised to its sixth straight victory against Bard on Friday night, defeating the Raptors 77-34 on the road. 12 different Brewers scored in the victory as Vassar improved to 13-7 overall and 10-3 in conference play while Bard falls to 1-17 and 0-11 in Liberty League action.

Freshman Bella Tawney scored the first six points of the night for the Brewers as they jumped out to an early 12-0 lead with just over five minutes left in the opening quarter. Bard's Mae Redmond knocked down a three-pointer for Bard for its first points at 12-3 (5:00) before eight straight points from the Brewers, including two layups from freshman Sierra McDermed, put Vassar up 20-3 after one quarter of action.

Following a layup from Bard's Maggy Peyton to cut the lead to 24-5 at the 6:36 mark, back-to-back layups from Margo Gramiak put the Brewers up by 25 (5:35). Freshman Sam Lederman rattled off five straight points followed by a three-pointer from Kolby Davis to take a 36-10 halftime lead.

VC scored the first seven points of the third quarter, capped by a three-point play from sophomore Julia Harvey at the 8:29 mark, to take a 43-10 lead. Sophomore Tova Gelb registered five consecutive points followed by a Harvey triple and a Tawney lay-in and pushed its lead to 53-13 with 5:45 left in the quarter. Thalia Grandinetti's step back jumper with 29 seconds trimmed the lead down to 60-20 after three quarters of play.

Davis hit his second three-pointer of the day to open the scoring for Vassar in the fourth quarter and freshman Naiya Kurnik converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 6:04 left to play (66-22). Freshman Caroline Siekman drilled a three-pointer with two and a half minutes left along with a lay-in and Davis finished his strong day with a jumper to give Vassar a 77-34 victory.

McDermed led the way for VC with 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals while Gelb added 10 points, five rebounds and three steals. Tawney scored nine points and Harvey finished with eight points, three assists and three boards. Kurnik recorded five points, five boards and four assists with Siekman chipped in seven points and seven rebounds.

Grandinetti recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards while handing out four assists. Redmond tallied eight points and three rebounds while Peyton chipped in two points, eight boards and three assists.

Vassar finished the night shooting 38.5-percent and converted on eight triples while going 9-for-12 at the free throw line. The Raptors shot 23.4-percent and knocked down five threes and was 7-for-16 from the free throw stripe.

VC will return to action tomorrow afternoon with its four game road trip against Rensselear Polytechnic Insititute at 2:00 p.m. Bard will take on Union at 2:00 p.m. at home tomorrow.
