Women's Basketball Advances to Semifinals with 73-57 Victory Over Union

Three players total double figure points in the win for Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Three players scored in double figures for the third-seeded Vassar College Women's Basketball team earned a 73-57 Liberty League Championship First Round victory over sixth-seeded Union College on Tuesday evening. The Brewers will take on the second-seeded Skidmore Thoroughbreds on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m.

Vassar scored the first six points of the contest as senior Eliza Srinivasan, freshman Bella Tawney and sophomore Julia Harvey each converted lay-ins early. A layup from Megan Lee at the 3:40 mark got Union within three before a triple from Srinivasan expanded the lead to 12-6. Srinivsan's second made triple of the first quarter put Vassar ahead 15-10 after the first 10 minutes of action.

Following a made free throw from Lee to open the quarter for the Dutchwomen, Vassar went on a 9-2 run on two buckets from senior Alex Lee, one from Harvey and a triple from sophomore Tova Gelb at the 5:56 mark. Kennedy Clark's layup with 4:46 remaining in the half put Union within seven but the Brewers expanded its lead to 13 on three-pointers from Srinivasan and freshman Maddie Ahearn with just over two minutes left in the half. An three-point play from Olivia Pachla got Union within 10 but the Brewers got two buckets before the end of the half to hold a 38-24 at the half.

Vassar's lead grew to 19 points at the 3:08 mark of the third quarter on two free throws from Ahearn and then expanded to 21 on a triple from freshman Naiya Kurnik to go ahead 53-32 with 2:02 remaining.

Union got the contest within 12 points in the fourth quarter as jumpers from Clark, Grace Enselek and Lee put the Dutchwomen within 57-45 at the 5:34 mark. Vassar's advantage held strong throughout the final minutes of the fourth quarter as six combined free throws from Harvey and Lee gave Vassar a 15 point lead with a minute left in the contest. Freshman Margo Gramiak converted two free throws in the final minute along with a three-pointer from rookie Kolby Davis to advance Vassar to the Liberty League Championship Semifinal. 

Harvey led the trio of double digit scorers as she finished with 17 points, six rebounds, three steals and an assist. Lee tallied 16 points, three assists and two steals while Srinivasan recorded 15 points, six assists and five boards. Gelb added eight points and seven rebounds along with Tawney chipping in seven rebounds and two blocks.

Pachla led the Dutchwomen with a game-high 18 points and added six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Lee recorded 10 points, six boards and two blocks with Kendall Degenhardt talling eight points and four rebounds. Clark finished with four points, five steals, four assists and three rebounds.

Vassar finished the contest shooting 39.7-percent overall and canned 10 triples while Union shot 42.4-percent overall and was 0-for-6 from three-point range. The Brewers outscored Union by six at the free throw line and converted eight second chance points while the Dutchwomen held a 34-20 edge in points in the paint.

The Brewers will travel to Saratoga Springs on Friday night for a semifinal matchup with second-seeded Skidmore at 7:00 p.m.
