Tova Gelb scored 13 straight points in the third quarter on her way to a career-high 23 points as the Vassar College Women's Basketball recorded its third straight road victory 86-73 over the Rochester Institute of Technology on Friday. Vassar improves to 15-7 overall and 12-3 in Liberty League contests while the Tigers move to 6-15 and 4-10 in conference action.
RIT rushed out to a 10-2 lead on four points from Erin DiPaola and triples from Emma Waite and Abigail Smith at the 8:06 mark. A jumper from senior
Eliza Srinivasan at the 3:07 mark cut the advantage to four before RIT's Lila McGuiggan knocked down a three-pointer to push the lead out to seven with 1:43 left in the opening quarter.Â
In the second quarter, VC tied the contest at 18 on a triple from Gelb (8:12) and the Brewers took its first lead at 20-19 on a two-pointer from Srinivasan about a minute later. The two squads traded leads in the remaining minutes of the second quarter as VC took a two point lead into the halftime break after a lay-in from Srinivasan with 33 seconds left in the half.
Following a three-pointer from Ashley Orrell that tied the contest up at 37 with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter, Gelb went on 13-2 run on her own as VC's lead ballooned to 50-39 with four and a half minutes left. Two free throws from McGuiggan with 1:34 left got RIT within six but Vassar closed the quarter with a bucket from freshman

Gelb opened the fourth with a layup and a Srinivasan triple extended the Brewers lead to 15 just under a minute into the quarter. A three-pointer from rookie
Naiya Kurnik with 1:34 left in the contest got Vassar its largest lead at 18 points as buckets from freshman
Margo Gramiak and Kurnik in the final minute earned VC a 13 point road victory.
Gelb finished with a career-high 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting and 4-for-8 from three-point range in 22 minutes of action. Srinivasan finished an all-around day with 18 points, nine assists, six rebounds and two steals while Kurnik added a season-best 21 points off the bench on 8-for-10 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from bonus distance. Julia Harvey added three assists and seven rebounds for Vassar.
Kaleesha Joseph recorded a double-double for the Tigers with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Waite added 14 points and two assists. McGuiggan finished with 11 points off the bench while Smith tallied 10 points, four boards, two assists and two steals. DiPaola chipped in seven points and three assists for RIT.
The Brewers finished the contest shooting 48.5-percent from the field and made 10 three-pointers and converted on 10 free throws. RIT shot 39.7-percent on the night while converting on 11 triples and knocked down 12 free throws. The Tigers held the points off turnovers at 14-10 while the Brewers held a 44-26 edge in points in the paint.
Vassar concludes its road trip tomorrow afternoon against Skidmore at 2:00 p.m. in Saratoga Springs. The Tigers return to the court at home against Union at 2:00 p.m.
