Men's Basketball Falls to Hobart

Brewers feature three in double digits

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Men's Basketball team held a 33-30 lead at halftime before the Hobart Statesmen battled back to earn a 69-58 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics and Fitness Center. The Brewers fall to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in Liberty League play while Hobart improves to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in conference action.

FIRST HALF
  • The Statesmen took an early 8-5 lead following four straight points from Carter Meshanic before Vassar battled back for a 20-14 lead with 6:54 remaining after five points from first year Avery Lee and makes from junior Case Parsons and first year Shea Fitzgerald.
  • Vassar's lead ballooned to 10 points at the 4:39 mark on a three-pointer from sophomore Sacha Greenberg and a jumper from Parsons.
  • A bucket from first year Kreekor Karageuzian brought the lead back to 10 with three minutes to go before Hobart rattled off nine straight points to reduce the Vassar advantage to 29-28 with 1:19 remaining.
  • Two jumpers from first year JP Miranda and Lee pushed the lead back to three points at the half for the Brewers.
  • The Brewers ended the opening half shooting 51.7-percent from the field and knocked down three three-pointers while the Statesmen shot 36.4-percent overall and did not convert on a triple in the half.
SECOND HALF
  • Vassar pushed its lead to five at the 18:06 mark on a lay-in from senior Logan Scott before the Statesmen responded with a 7-0 run to take a two point lead on a bucket from Aidan Rodgers.
  • Lee's jumper kept the Brewers within two with 13:56 remaining until Hobart expanded its lead to six points multiple times over the next six minutes.
  • Following a three-pointer from Scott to trim the lead down to five, a jumper from Isaiah Washington and a three-pointer from Lucey increased the Statesmen lead to 10 with 5:25 remaining.
  • Vassar got within seven following free throws from Lee and Miranda with three minutes to go but Hobart pushed its lead to double digits in the final two minutes.
  • Hobart shot a blistering 60.9-percent from the field and made two three-pointers while Vassar was limited to just 29-percent and made three triples.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Fitzgerald tallied a team-high 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting while Scott recorded seven points and 10 rebounds.
  • Parsons scored 10 points and added two rebounds and assists along with Lee registering 10 points.
  • First year Eric Zhang tallied a team-high three assists.
FOR THE STATESMEN
  • C. Meshanic led the way with a game-high 22 points and added five points and two blocks.
  • Lucey recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Rodgers finished with nine points, four assists and four rebounds.
  • Healy tallied nine points while Washington registered nine points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.
GAME STATS
  • Vassar shot 40-percent overall and added six three-pointers while the Statesmen finished 46.4-percent from the field and made two threes along with shooting 15-for-21 from the free throw line.
  • Hobart held the edge in points off turnovers at 21-7, second chance points at 16-12 and points in the paint at 48-38.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar will play host to Liberty League foe Skidmore on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
  • Hobart will take on RPI at home on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
