Brewers Open David Wells Classic With Victory Over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

Three Brewers score in double-figures

Claremont, CA – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team pushed its winning streak to three games on Friday with a 63-52 win against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to open the David Wells Classic. Julia Harvey (Delmar, NY) led three Brewers in double-figures with a game-high 19 points.
 
Friday's victory pushes Vassar to 4-1 overall on the season, while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps remains winless in four outings.
 
First Half
  • Vassar outscored Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 20-7 in the opening 20 minutes, shooting 53.3-percent in the first quarter.
  • After a Mary Markaryan three-pointer brought the Athenas to within 7-5, Vassar ripped off a 13-2 run to close the period and carry a 13-point edge into the second stanza.
  • Harvey and Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) each scored four points over the run for the Brewers with Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) draining a three-pointer with 14 seconds left to close the scoring in the frame.
  • After going 8-for-15 from the floor in the opening stanza, Vassar cooled to 4-for-14 shooting in the second period.
  • The Athenas outscored Vassar 17-13 heading into the intermission to pull to within 33-24 after 20 minutes of play.
  • Vassar gained a lead as large as 15-points on a Gelb layup in the opening minute of the second quarter and did not let Claremont-Mudd-Scripps closer than eight points in the period.
  • Vassar closed the first half shooting 41.4-percent overall and 4-for-9 from three-point range.
  • Claremont-Mudd-Scripps converted at 33.3-percent overall and went just 1-fof-12 from three-point range over the opening 20 minutes.
 
Second Half
  • Harvey opened the third quarter scoring with a three-pointer to push the Vassar lead back to double-figures at 36-24.
  • A pair of Gelb free-throws with 4:43 left in the third frame gave Vassar a 17-point lead before the Brewers took a game-high 19 point lead, at 48-29, on a Gelb jumper with 1:35 left in the frame.
  • Vassar would not allow the Athenas closer than 11 points throughout the fourth period and held a fourth quarter lead as large as 16 points, at 55-39, on another Gelb conversion with 7:50 left to play in the game.
  • The Brewers shot an even 40-percent from the floor in the second half and went 3-for-8 from three-point range.
  • The Athenas, who went 4-for-21 from the floor in the third quarter, finished the second half shooting 28.9-percent overall, including a 3-for-12 effort from three-point range.
 
For The Brewers
  • Harvey led all scorers in the game with 19 points, going 7-for-13 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers. Harvey added five rebounds and a team-high four assists in the victory.
  • Gelb finished a strong night with 16 points, going 7-for-11 from the floor, finishing a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with two assists and a pair of blocked shots.
  • Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) chipped in 12 points, four rebounds, two blocks and a team-high three steals.
  • Ahearn canned two three-pointers on the way to nine points.
  • Naiya Kurnik (Fallbrook, CA) hauled in nine rebounds, swiped two steals and scored five points.
 
For The Athenas
  • Markaryan led the way with 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
  • Grace Florendo tallied eight points, handed out two assists and swiped a pair of steals.
  • Kayla Ishibashi contributed eight points and two assists.
  • Tanya Ghai led the team with three assists and chipped in six points.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot 40.7-percent overall in the game and went 7-for-17 from three-point range.
  • Claremont-Mudd-Scripps converted at just 30.8-percent overall and went 4-for-24 from three-point range.
  • Vassar outscored Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 28-20 in the paint.
  • Points off of turnovers went to the Brewers 16-9.
  • Vassar turned 12 offensive rebounds into a 16-8 edge in second chance scoring.
