Men's Basketball Falls in Day One of the Hudson Valley Classic Against New Paltz

Adams tallies game-high 17 points for the Brewers

NEWBURGH, NY - Led by three double-digit scorers, the New Paltz Hawks earned a 76-65 victory over the Vassar College Men's Basketball team in the first contest of the Hudson Valley Classic at Mount Saint Mary College on Friday night. Junior Luke Adams had a game-high 17 points for the Brewers, who fall to 2-2 overall, while the Hawks improve to 3-0 on the season.

FIRST HALF
  • Vassar took an early 7-3 lead as first year Shea Fitzgerald and junior Luke Adams each knocked down jumpers along with sophomore Sacha Greenberg knocking down a triple.
  • Rylan Blondo's triple at the 15:04 mark tied the game at 10 before the Hawks went on a 16-4 run over the next six minutes to take a 24-14 lead on back-to-back buckets from Dakoda Smith at 9:10.
  • The Brewers responded with eight straight points to cut the lead to two at the 6:54 mark as Adams poured in four points along with a bucket each from Greenberg and junior Devyn Benson.
  • Vassar drew even at 29 on a driving lay-in from Adams and regained the lead at 32-29 with three and a half minutes left in the half on a triple from junior Alex Walters.
  • A putback from Greenberg gave the Brewers a 37-34 lead at the half as Vassar shot 41.7-percent from the field and 5-for-15 from the three-point line in the half.
  • New Paltz finished the half shooting 41.9-percent overall and converted 2-for-11 from three-point territory.
SECOND HALF
  • Vassar extended its lead to six points on the third triple of the game from Adams with 17:59 left before the Hawks cut it down to one on a triple from Sean St. Lucia with 15:44 remaining.
  • A driving bucket from St. Lucia tied the game at 46 with 13:46 remaining followed by New Paltz regaining the lead at 50-48 on a layup from AJ Knight about a minute later.
  • The Hawks lead increased to eight following a 6-0 run on four points from Lucas Seyoum and a fastbreak layup from Smith with 7:37 remaining.
  • Vassar got within five at the 2:12 mark on a three-pointer from Fitzgerald and once again got within five on a Parsons bucket with 1:43 to go.
  • New Paltz converted six free throws in the final minute to take the 76-65 victory.
  • Vassar finished the second half shooting 39.3-percent from the field and made three triples. The Hawks shot 44.8-percent in the second half and knocked down two three-pointers.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Adams led the way with a game-high 17 points on 6-for-10 from the field and knocked down three three-pointers.
  • Greenberg recorded 13 points and eight rebounds while Fitzgerald added nine points.
  • Parsons finished with seven points and 10 boards along with Walters knocking down two triples.
FOR THE HAWKS
  • St. Lucia scored 16 points along with five boards and three assists for New Paltz.
  • Seyoum registered 14 points, Alex Krupinski scored 12 points and Blondo added 10 points and three assists.
  • Knight finished the game with eight points and seven rebounds.
GAME STATISTICS
  • Vassar finished the night at 40.6-percent overall and 8-for-26 from three-point range while the Hawks shot 43.3-percent overall and just 4-for-22 from bonus distance.
  • The Hawks outscored the Brewers by 15 at the free throw line and held a 16-6 edge in points off turnovers.
  • New Paltz also outscored Vassar 36-22 in the paint and 11-0 in fast break points.
UP NEXT
  • Both teams will head to New Paltz for day two of the Hudson Valley Classic as the Brewers will take on Mount Saint Mary at 4:00 p.m. followed by New Paltz and Bard facing off at 6:00 p.m.
