Vassar Suffers Road Loss At New Paltz

Gelb posts double-double

New Paltz, NY – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team dropped its initial road game of the season Tuesday night following a 70-62 defeat at New Paltz. Tova Gelb (Sharon, MA) led a pair of Brewers in double-figures with 21 points.
 
Tuesday's loss drops Vassar to 1-1 through the first two games of the season, while New Paltz improves to 2-0 through its first two contests of the year.
 
First Half
  • Vassar went just 2-for-9 from the floor over the opening 10 minutes and found itself down 17-12 through a quarter of play.
  • After Gelb opened the scoring with a jumper, New Paltz ripped off the next six points to open a 6-2 lead 3:38 into the contest.
  • Vassar would pull to within two points twice the rest of the way in the opening period, but would not be able to pull even.
  • New Paltz grabbed a 15-9 lead, its largest of the period, on a Jenny Walton three-pointer with 74 seconds left in the opening stanza.
  • Vassar improved to 41.7-percent shooting in the second quarter, but was outscored by the Hawks by four points heading into the break.
  • Gelb converted a layup early in the second frame to slice the New Paltz advantage to just 17-16.
  • The Hawks answered with the next seven points, including another Walton three-pointer, to surge in front 24-16 with 6:08 left in the half.
  • New Paltz pushed its lead to double-figures for the first time in the game on a pair of Brianna Fitzgerald free-throws that gave the Hawks a 28-17 lead.
  • The Brewers pulled to within 29-24 on a Naiya Kurnik (Fallbrook, CA) conversion with 1:24 left before halftime, but New Paltz countered with a pair of Fitzgerald layups to carry a 33-24 advantage into the intermission.
  • Vassar finished the opening 20 minutes shooting 33.3-percent overall and went 2-for-6 from three-point range.
  • New Paltz converted at 38.2-percent overall and also went 2-for-6 from long distance.
 
Second Half
  • Vassar would not be able to pull closer than seven points throughout the third period.
  • New Paltz pushed its lead back to 41-30 on two Fitzgerald free-throws with 6:16 left in the frame.
  • A Julia Sabatino bucket with 3:31 left in the quarter gave the Hawks a 47-35 advantage.
  • New Paltz matched the 12-point advantage twice more over the remainder of the period, including on a Fitzgerald bucket in the closing seconds that sent the Hawks to the fourth quarter with a 51-39 lead.
  • The Hawks lead in the fourth period grew to a game-high 16 points on two more Fitzgerald free-throws and remained in double-figures until a 7-0 run brought the Brewers to within 61-52 with 2:32 left to play.
  • Vassar climbed to within 68-62 on a Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) three-pointer with 33 seconds left.
  • Fitzgerald answered with her final bucket of the game to close out the scoring with 20 seconds left.
  • Vassar improved to 38.4-percent shooting after halftime and went 3-for-9 from behind the arc.
  • New Paltz shot 39.4-percent in the second half and went without a three-pointer over the final 20 minutes.
 
For The Brewers
  • Gelb finished with a season-high 21 points on 7-for-15 shooting from the floor and a 7-for-9 effort from the free-throw line. Gelb closed a double-double effort with a team-high 11 rebounds while adding three assists, a block and two steals.
  • Maddie Ahearn (Bethlehem, PA) chipped in 11 points off the bench, going 4-for-7 from the floor with a pair of three-pointers.
  • McDermed totaled nine points and three rebounds.
  • Kurnik finished with six points, five assists and three steals.
  • Tash Thompson (Los Altos Hills, CA) added six points off the bench.
 
For The Hawks
  • Fitzgerald finished the night with a game-high 31 points and 12 rebounds, adding three assists, four blocks and a pair of steals.
  • Walton hit the team's only two triples and finished with 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and three thefts.
  • Sabatino totaled 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
  • Abby Korzekwinski totaled eight points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot 36.7-percent overall in the game and went 5-for-15 from three-point range.
  • New Paltz converted at 38.8-percent and went just 2-for-13 from bonus distance.
  • New Paltz outscored Vassar 44-30 in the paint and 16-9 in transition points.

  • Vassar opens play at the Western New England Tip-Off Tournament on Friday against Salve Regina.
  • New Paltz hosts Mount Saint Mary College on November 21.
