Women's Rugby Advances to NCR Elite Eight with Thrilling Win Over Coastal Carolina

Brewers will face off with Temple tomorrow for a chance to go to the Final Four

Vassar College Women 17 v 15 Coastal Carolina University
Tries: Jude Robinson (1), Sophia Bailey (1) & Annie Adams (1).
Cons: Zoe Lynch (1).

Vassar jumped out to an early lead when fullback Jude Robinson returned a clearance kick and Vassar had a 5-0 lead.

Certainly one would have expected that to settle the nerves but Vassar remained on edge. The Vassar pack was under some pressure in the set piece and the big strong Coastal Carolina set of forwards managed to get on the front foot.

The South Atlantic Women's Collegiate Rugby Conference team really poured on the pressure and managed to go through the Vassar defense and then get the ball wide which led to two tries in the first half. However credit is due to Sophia Bailey and Jude Robinson for their outstanding cover tackles scrambling back on a number of occasions. In fact Bailey successfully managed to hold up the ball over the line after a sustained period of Vassar defense.

The Brewers lost Leah Dourmashkin to injury, but she was ably replaced by Maddie Sumrow. The major problem was the Vassar tackling as players made tackles, but did not hold onto the ball carrier.

The half finished with Coastal Carolina 10-5 up.

In the second forty, Vassar changed their attack and sought to regain the initiative. However, Coastal Carolina gained good field possession following a couple of penalties and eventually went over to lead 15-5.

Samuel Tang and Katie Canavan came on for Andie Authers and Julia Wolff

The next score came at just the right time for Vassar when Annie Adams dove over near the posts and it was game on at 15-12. Lynch converted.

Credit is due to Coastal Carolina as they continued to make inroads and probably one of the biggest moments of the second half was when Vassar's Asia Baker made a shuttering tackle that normally would have knocked the ball carrier back, but on this occasion it was Baker who was knocked back. But her attitude certainly epitomized the resilience of the Vassar squad.

Vassar struck again to take the lead when Sophia Bailey squeezed in on the corner. So with the score at 17-15 Vassar now had to see out the remaining 19 minutes of the game.

Eventually time expired and Zoe Lynch booted the ball off of the field and Vassar now advances to the Elite Eight, i.e. quarterfinals, where they will meet Temple University.

The winner advances to the Final Four in Houston, Texas on December 2 and 3.
