CANTON, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team won its sixth Liberty League match of the season on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers defeated St. Lawrence 25-16, 21-25, 25-8, 23-25, 15-9 on the road. Vassar improves to 13-9 overall and 6-2 in Liberty League play while the Saints drop to 4-18 overall and 1-7 in conference matchups.
Vassar finishes the conference regular season in a three-way tie for second place with a 6-2 record with William Smith and Clarkson and will wait for the tiebreakers to play out before the Liberty League Championship schedule is announced.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- FIRST SET
- The Brewers opened the match with an 8-1 lead as first year Maura McAusland buried three aces while first year T Petro also landed an ace.
- St. Lawrence drew within two points at 11-9 on an ace from Vivian Zymeck before the Brewers scored five straight on a winner each from McAusland and junior Julia Hale and an ace from sophomore Melia Voss.
- Jada Masiclat's kill drew the Saints within 22-16 before the Brewers scored the final three points, including a kill each from Hale and first year Holland Kaplan.
- SECOND SET
- Vassar went ahead 6-3 early following a kill from Kaplan before the Saints answered to take a 10-7 lead as Kori Meissner landed five consecutive aces.
- The Brewers regained the lead following six straight points, led by three blocks from Hale and sophomore Molly Delahunty.
- Following Vassar taking a 21-20 lead following a kill from junior Frannie Anthony-Brumfield, the Saints scored the final five of the set with three kills from Araiza Acum-Santos and one from Kate Gardner.
- THIRD SET
- The Brewers jumped out to an 11-1 lead early in the set as McAusland tallied three more aces and Kaplan registered two more kills.
- Vassar's lead grew to 20-4 following kills from sophomore Rebecca Gutierrez and Anthony-Brumfield and an ace from Kaplan.
- Gardner's service ace cut the lead to 23-8 before Voss' ace gave Vassar the third set victory.
- FOURTH SET
- Once again, the Brewers jumped out to a quick 11-3 lead following three aces from Petro and kills from Kaplan, Delahunty and McAusland.
- St. Lawrence battled back to eventually tie the set at 16 all on three straight winners from Zymeck before taking a 20-18 lead on a block from Adeline Riesenberger and Vanessa Latam.
- Vassar regained the lead at 22-21 after kills from Kaplan, McAusland and Anthony-Brumfield before the Saints took the set following an ace from Meissner and kills from Acum-Santos and Latam.
- FIFTH SET
- Vassar took a 4-1 lead to begin the deciding set as Voss landed an ace, McAusland buried a winner and Delahunty and Hale combined for a block.
- The Saints cut the lead to two on a kill from Acum-Santos before the Brewers scored four straight, including a kill each from Kaplan and Voss.
- St. Lawrence got within two at 9-7 on an ace from Maggie Layman and a winner from Zymeck before the Brewers expanded the lead back to 12-8.
- Rachel Boudreau's kill put the Saints within three before a kill from McAusland and a block from Delahunty and Hale clinched the five set victory.
FOR THE BREWERS
- Kaplan posted 18 kills, 12 digs and two aces while McAusland registered 12 kills, seven aces, four digs and two blocks.
- Petro recorded a match-high 18 digs and four aces while Hale had five kills and seven blocks.
- Anthony-Brumfield added five kills while Delahunty recorded seven blocks.
- Voss handed out 25 assists, including her 1000th career assist, and added three aces and eight digs.
FOR THE SAINTS
- Acum-Santos tallied a match-high 19 kills while Zymeck recorded 14 kills, two blocks and five digs.
- Riesenberger posted five kills while Latam handed out a match-high 37 assists and added three blocks and a team-high 14 digs.
- Meissner posted 12 digs and a team-high six service aces.
