Women's Swimming & Diving Splits Against Bantams & Lyons

Brewers post 216-71 win over Mount Holyoke; Shoulder tough 149-143 loss to Trinity

HARTFORD, CT – The Vassar College women's and men's swimming & diving squads returned to competition for the first time in 2023, heading to Trinity College for action on Wednesday afternoon. The Brewers women defeated Mount Holyoke, 216-71, but shouldered a narrow 149-143 loss to the host Bantams. On the men's side, Trinity recorded a 155-131 victory over Vassar.

Meet action opened in fine form with the 200-medley relay as the women saw junior Sarah Quintana, rookie Abbe Colgan and seniors Lillian Lowenthal and Abby Whittington taking second overall in 1:51.54. Finishing third overall was the group of junior Jolie Walker, rookie Frances Pope, sophomore Maya Luongo and freshman Bella Rippon in 1:57.62.

The men's event saw the Brewers top relay take third overall in a time of 1:41.28. Comprising that foursome was rookie Sam Deluca, seniors Anthony Cheng and Jason Albaum, along with sophomore Hayden Ehrenfeld. Taking fourth was senior Leroy Wang, junior Rory Stumpf, sophomore Tyler Tsukuda and rookie Croix Horsley with a mark of 1:49.12.

Next up in the women's 1,000-freestyle, it was a 1-2 punch for the Brewers as rookie Addie Wiener won with a time of 11:15.05. Classmate Maleigha Vietti finished second overall, touching the all in 11:25.46. In the men's event, senior Robbie Perot took second overall, finishing in a time of 10:23.34, while rookie Robin Auwaerter was fourth in 11:25.06.

The 200-freestyle was up next as rookie Abigail McLaughlin took third overall in 2:03.24. Classmate Quinn Hoagland finished fourth with a mark of 2:07.03, while junior Alanna Muello was fifth in 2:07.87. In the men's event, sophomore Ben Glazebnik was second, touching the wall in 1:51.97, as junior Lukas Johnson was fourth in 1:58.85.

Quintana went on to claim victory in the 100-backstroke, posting a time of 1:00.17 as Rippon was runner-up in 1:01.99. Rounding out the top-three was Walker, who touched in 1:07.11. The men's event saw Deluca finish third in 59.95, while Wang posted fourth in 1:05.63. Rookie James Hatch finished fifth overall in 1:13.65.

Next up was the 100-breaststroke as Colgan finished second overall in the women's event with a time of 1:12.49. Rookie Stephanie Norris was fifth overall in 1:15.83, while Pope earned sixth in 1:18.26. The men's race was won by Cheng, who touched in a winning time of 1:02.47. Junior Rory Stumpf finished third in 1:05.60, while Auwaerter was fourth in 1:10.76.

The women's 200-butterfly saw junior Alejandra Robins take second overall with a mark of 2:16.32, while senior Grace Myers was third in 2:17.33. Lowenthal posted fourth with a time of 2:18.24. In the men's event, Albaum was runner-up in 2:08.09, while Tsukuda was third in 2:12.59.

In the 50-freestyle, Whittington led a charge of top finishes, taking second in 25.58. Luongo was third in 25.83, while rookie Lilly Masters was fourth in 26.39. Glazebnik was the winner in the men's event, touching in 22.17. Taking third was Ehrenfeld in 22.73, while Johnson was fourth in 23.52.

Action shifted to the diving well as senior Evelyn Boyle posted third overall in the women's 1-meter with 164.40 points. The men's 1-meter event saw sophomore Jacob Cerone take fourth with 152.50 points, while senior Ben Bragin was fifth with 124.10 points.

Back to the pool for the 100-freestyle, the Brewers were paced on the women's side by Luongo, who touched the wall for second in 56.27. Whittington earned third in 56.34, while Muello was fifth in 57.87. The men's side saw another victory, this time from Glazebnik, who won in 48.85. Ehrenfeld was close behind in third in 50.29, while Stumpf was fifth (53.53).

Rippon was the event winner in the 200-backstroke, taking victory in 2:14.33. Vietti was third in 2:19.39, while Hoagland was fourth in 2:23.68. The men's event saw Tsukuda finish second in 2:15.02, while Wang and Hatch were third (2:28.59) and fourth (2:37.67), respectively.

Next up in the 200-breaststroke, Lowenthal powered to second overall in 2:32.95, while Colgan was third in 2:40.33. The men's side saw another win from Cheng as he won in 2:18.27, while Auwaerter was third in 2:33.06.

In the 500-freestyle, Wiener was the victor with a time of 5:27.35, as Quintana took second in 5:27.79 to complete the 1-2 punch. McLaughlin was fifth overall in 5:52.36. Perot earned second on the men's side, finishing in 4:55.47. Robins finished third in the 100-butterfly in 1:01.86, while Myers was fifth in 1:03.94. The men's event saw Albaum finish third (56.30), Stumpf in fourth (57.21), Deluca in fifth (57,97) and Horsley in sixth (1:02.15).

The final diving events were next as the competitors took to the 3-meter board. Boyle earned second overall with 156.30 points for the women, while Cerone was second with 179.75 points and Bragin was fourth with 115.05 points.

In the 200-individual medley, Rippon paced the women's race in second with a time of 2:16.25, while Lowenthal was third in 2:17.63. The men's event saw Cheng take second in 2:05.82, Albaum was third in 2:15.78 and Tsukuda was fourth in 2:24.27.

The final event of the meet was the 400-free relay as Masters, Luongo, Whitington and McLaughlin combined to finish second in 3:42.73. Additionally, Wiener, Quintana, Muello and Myers earned critical points in third with a time of 3:49.59. The men's event was won by the Brewers as Glazebnik, Perot, Johnson and Ehrenfeld posted a time of 3:17.19.

Both squads return to action next week with a pair of dual meets. The Brewers head to Pace on January 20 for a 6pm tilt, followed the next day as Vassar hosts Union College at 1pm for their final home meet of the year. That meet will also see the celebration of the Brewers Senior class.
