SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Three players reached double-figures as the Vassar College men's basketball team posted a 70-52 win over Union College in Liberty League action on Tuesday evening. The Brewers move to 8-5 overall with a 4-2 league mark, while the Dutchmen slip to 2-11 and 1-5 in the Liberty League.
A tight scoring game, which saw both teams tied at 12 at the 9:16 mark, opened in favor of the Brewers soon after as back-to-back three pointers from senior guards
Kevin McAuliffe and
Ethan Ellis pushed the visitors lead to six (18-12).
Those buckets were part of a 13-0 run, anchored on the backend by a layup from junior forward
Case Parsons and another trey from McAuliffe for a 25-12 lead at the 4:22 mark. Senior captain
Avni Mustafaj dropped in a pair of free throws before Union countered with a jumper by Edward Baptiste.
A follow-up jumper from Aren Cummings with 2:05 to go closed the gap to 10 (27-17), buckets from McAuliffe and Ellis in the closing seconds saw the Brewers head to the locker room with a 31-18 lead.
Out of the intermission, the Brewers kept things going as another three from Ellis pushed the margin to 21 (40-19) at the 17:27 mark. A bucket from Cummings cut the deficit a couple minutes later and a pair of free throws from Mike Concannon made it a 44-26 margin with 14:33 to play.
Midway through the half, Vassar's offense continued to roll as a three-point shot from senior guard
Zev Katz fell, followed by a free throw from Parsons to widen the score to 19 (54-35) with 10:05 on the clock. The Dutchmen worked to chip away the deficit as Sean Regis sank a layup, but another three from Katz, coupled with a McAuliffe bucket opened a 20-point (61-41) score with 7:37 remaining.
Regis later dropped in five points, including a three, to help close Union's deficit, but a three from sophomore guard
Alan Cedeno pushed the Vassar lead to 66-48 at the 3:54 mark. The Dutchmen began to battle back, taking advantage at the charity stripe with four free throws, but makes at the line for the Brewers, along with a deep three by sophomore forward
Alex Walters saw the visitors close out the scoring for the win.
Vassar, which saw nearly every player on the roster see time on the court, was led by a game-high 15 points, from McAuliffe as he added an assist and a steal. Ellis added 14 points with three boards and two assists, while Mustafaj recorded 11 points with six caroms and a game-high seven assists. Senior guard
Jack Rothenberg added eight points with a team-best nine boards and two assists, while Parsons posted a game-best three blocks.
Union was led by Sean Regis, who had 11 points with three boards. Mike Manley notched 10 points with an assist, while Cummings had eight points. Justin Regis notched four assists and a game-best 12 rebounds with a block, a steal and two points.
The Brewers return to action on Friday, welcoming Clarkson to the AFC Gym at 7:30pm. Union hosts RIT, also on Friday at 7:30pm.
