POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Powered by a strong defensive effort and a five-save performance from junior goalie
Teresa Zimmer, the Vassar women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw over New York University in the Brewers home opener on Gordon Field on Saturday. The Brewers are now 0-1-1 overall while the Violets move to 1-0-1.
The Brewers had several chances to open the game as a header shot by junior forward
Ariana Pjetri went just wide, while a shot from sophomore midfielder
Noelle Namba in the 16th minute sailed just over the net.
Over a four-minute stretch, the visiting Violets sent a number of shots in as Tate Jordan and Kelli Keady dropped in back-to-back shots that were saved by Zimmer, followed by a Gabriella Funk shot that was blocked by the Brewers defense. Jordan had another opportunity in the 22nd minute, but Zimmer once again came up big with the save.
Second half action saw the Violets jump out once again as Caitlin Fong's shot in the 53rd minute was once again blocked by the Brewers d-line. Junior midfielder
Cate Greene sent in a shot that went just wide in the 59th minute, and a determined shot by senior captain and midfielder
Violet Munnelly arched just high and over the net minutes later.
The Brewers nearly ended the stalemate in the 85th minute as a nice cross from rookie forward
Riley McGrath toward the left post saw Namba's shot on goal just miss the corner. NYU's Catie Collins closed out the attempts in the game with a last second wide shot in the Vassar zone.
The Brewers return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Montclair State for a 7pm road game. NYU is back in action on Friday, competing in the Engineering Cup, hosted by Stevens as the Violets open at 5pm against TCNJ.
