Men's Tennis Opens Strong on Day 1 of ITA Regionals

Several doubles teams advance into their respective quarterfinal matches

MADISON, NJ – The Vassar College men's tennis team had an outstanding opening day of action at the 2022 ITA Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by Drew University. The Brewers saw a number of singles and doubles victories on the day, including two wins for rookies Fernando Bauermeister and Nolan Kubiak as they advance to the doubles quarterfinal round.

The rookie duo opened with an 8-4 victory over RIT's Birko and Movva. In the Round of 16, they squared off against St. Lawrence's Pinto and Heilbronner, recording an 8-5 win to move into the Quarterfinals. Saturday's match pits the Brewers duo against TCNJ's Michibatta and Maitland-Carter with an anticipated start time of 3pm.

Also in action of the main doubles draw was sophomore Arnav Agostinho and rookie Pedro Cattaruzzi. The pair faced Hamilton's Griff and Bartok, shouldering a 3-8 loss.

Vassar also saw several pairs in the B Draw Doubles action on Friday. Playing in a pod play style, Vassar sophomore James Balon and rookie Miles Sondergaard Jensen competed in pod 2, opening with a 6-0 win against TCNJ's Matkiwsky and Panoli. The duo then posted a 6-2 victory over Rochester's Malhofra and Hui. The duo suffered a 3-6 loss to RPI's Marston and Varansi, but their 2-1 record saw them win the Pod to advance to the B Draw Quarterfinals on Saturday. They will face NYU's Khastgir and Sabapathy.

Also competing in B Draw were rookies Ethan Mantell and Sigmund Winiecki, who were in Pod 3 and opened with a 6-3 win against Drew's Blumenthal and Amborgio. The duo suffered a 1-6 loss to TCNJ's Thomas and Schuster, but rebounded with a 6-4 win over Rochester's Fox and Kulvivat. They earned the Pod win and also advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday where they will face NJCU's Pluis and Loris.

In singles action, Agostinho opened with a solid 6-0, 6-4 win against Bard's Noah Gulla. He advanced to face Rochester's Kai Yuminaga, but fell in the Round of 16 by a hard-fought 4-6, 7-6 (4), 4-10 margin.

Bauermeister faced off against TCNJ's Ronaldo Jacome in his opening singles match, shouldering a tough 5-7, 5-7 loss, while Kubiak fell by a 3-6, 4-6 margin to TCNJ's Nikola Killbarda.

Junior captain Benjamin Almquist was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Hobart's Troy Steiner in the opening round of play, advancing to the Round of 16 with his victory. He faced TCNJ's Matt Michibata, falling 3-6, 4-6.

Action at this year's Regional Championships continues on Saturday and runs through Sunday.
