Center Valley, P.A. - The Vassar Women's Volleyball dropped two matches on Saturday afternoon at the DeSales quad. The Brewers lost a 15-25, 19-25, 18-25 decision to Stevenson in the first contest and then a 22-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-25 contest to Rutgers-Camden in the nightcap. Sophomore
Hailey Hayes (Canyon Lake, TX) put down 16 combined kills over the two matches.
Stevenson 3, Vassar 0
In the first game of the day, Vassar started out strong by picking up the first four points of the match after two Stevenson errors and kills from Hayes and freshman
Molly Delahunty (Newton, MA). Following a kill from sophomore
Molly Ardren (Essex, VT) to tie the set at seven, the Mustangs went on a 8-1 run to take a 15-7 lead in the set. The Mustangs put away 13 kills in the set, taking a 15-25 first set victory.
Stevenson started the second set hot as the Mustangs took the first five points of the set before a block from Delahunty and freshman
Rebecca Gutierrez (Oak Park, IL) helped to stop the quick rally. Two kills from sophomore
Julia Hale (Hillsborough, CA) helped the Brewers tie the set at nine apiece and Vassar took control of the set at 16-14 following kills from Hayes and Gutierrez. After a Stevenson service error to give Vassar a 19-18 advantage, the Mustangs scored the next seven points to earn the set win.
Following a back and forth beginning of the third set, Stevenson took a 12-6 lead after multiple kills from Shannon Baily and Adrianna Anderson. Kills from Hayes, Delahunty and Hale led to a mini run late in the set but the Mustangs won the third set and the match 18-25 after a setting error.
Hayes led the Brewers with nine kills in the game while Hale added eight winners. Delahunty finished with seven kills while junior
Maya Levine (Granby, MA) led the team in digs with nine. Freshman
Melia Voss (Marietta, GA) handed out a team-high 13 assists and Gutierrez added three blocks.
For Stevenson, Baily had a game-high 11 kills and three blocks while Molly Joyner added seven kills, eight digs, two service aces and two blocks. Kayla Vaeth led the team with a game-high three aces.
Rutgers-Camden 3, Vassar 1
In the nightcap, the first set was back and forth the entire way as neither team was four points apart at any point of the set. Both teams had 12 kills in the set and the Brewers held a 22-21 lead following a Raptors attack error. However, the Raptors earned the next four points and took a wild first set 22-25.
After the Raptors jumped out to an early 5-2 advantage in the second set, the Brewers fought back with a kill from Hayes and a service ace from Delahunty to cut the lead to 12-10. Following a kill from Rutgers-Camden's Brinn Hassan to take a 20-17 lead, a kill from Voss as well as three straight aces gave Vassar its first lead of the set. Hale put away a big kill on a set from Voss to earn the set victory 25-22.
Rutgers-Camden answered in the third set as kills from Isabella Choice and Erica Nebrich in rout to an early 11-5 advantage. Gutierrez picked up two quick kills in the set to cut it 14-10 but the Raptors continued to take advantage of their service aces and took home a 18-25 win.
The Brewers earned the first three tallies of the fourth set following two Raptors errors and another kill from Gutierrez. After a kill and a service aces from Hayes to put Vassar up 14-13 in the fourth stanza, the Raptors picked up 12 of the next 13 points in rout to a 15-25 fourth set victory and a 3-1 match triumph.
Hayes and Delahunty each had a team-high seven kills while junior
Ava Casalino (Portland, OR) and Gutierrez each added six kills. Levine led the way in digs with 15 while Hayes and freshman
Noa McCrane (Los Angeles, CA) chipped in 11 digs apiece. Gutierrez added four more blocks in the nightcap as Voss handed out 27 assists.
Nebrich led the Raptors with a game-high 13 kills while adding four blocks and eight digs. Morgan Fox added 15 digs while Bella Craig had 10 in addition to three service aces. Hassan had a team-high 19 assists while Ciera McCrae added 16 assists of her own.Â
Vassar returns to action on Saturday at home with their first tri-match of the season. The Brewers will take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy at 11:00 a.m. and then will face Muhlenberg at 3:00 p.m. at Kenyon Hall.
