Women's Soccer Plays to Hard-Fought Tie at Wesleyan

Defensive battle leads to 0-0 draw against Cardinals

MIDDLETOWN, CT – A strong defensive battle and a four-save effort from junior Teresa Zimmer saw the Vassar College women's soccer team play to a hard-fought 0-0 tie at Wesleyan University on Tuesday evening. The Brewers are now 3-2-2 overall, while the Cardinals – who are receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches DIII Poll, are now 2-2-1 on the young season.

The homestanding Cardinals began a quick assault on the Vassar net early as Catherine Gallagher sent in a shot in the fourth minute that was quickly saved by Zimmer, followed three minutes later by a shot from Grace Devanny that was saved in front by a Vassar defender.

The Brewers nearly answered in the 13th minute as a header from junior Claire Karlin caromed just high, while a shot from classmate Justine Tapert less than a minute later off a Noelle Namba corner kick was saved in front.

In the 40th minute, Wesleyan's Lily Jebejian sent a shot in that was stopped by Zimmer and the Brewers picked up another save shots from Waverly Meyers and Devanny kept the game scoreless over the final minutes of the stanza.

Second half action went off in similar fashion as neither team was able to find the back of the net. A shot from Saige Rovero saw Wesleyan's best early chance, but Zimmer was once again there for the save in the 55th minute.

The Cardinals sent another shot in in the 69th minute, this time a Cheyanne Ollie attempt that went wide of the net as the defensive battle continued. Wesleyan had another chance in the 80th minute as a corner shot from Audrey Lavey fell to the foot of Danielle Soto, but the shot sailed wide.

It continued to be a defensive stalemate in the final 10 minutes with the Brewers getting the last chance on goal, courtesy of a Madison Bouggess shot that was saved by Hammond in the last minute of the game.

Wesleyan posted a 9-4 advantage in shots for the contest, also hold a 5-1 edge in corner kicks on the evening.
In goal, Zimmer earned the draw with four saves on the night, while Hammond recorded two stops for the Cardinals.

Vassar is back on the pitch on Saturday when it opens its Liberty League schedule on the road. The Brewers head to Rochester for a 1pm game at RIT.
