POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Powered by a second-half header goal from sophomore midfielder Amer Lukovic, Montclair State University posted a 2-1 win over Vassar College in non-league action on Saturday afternoon. The Red Hawks move to 4-0-3 on the season, while the Brewers slip to 3-3-0 overall.
The Brewers got things going early, scoring in the fifth minute on a score by senior captain
Owen Fauth. Notching his third goal in the last two games, Fauth made a beautiful individual effort as he dribbled the ball in at the top of the box, ducking around multiple defenders. Finding a gap, the midfielder fired a shot that sailed into the top of the net just under the crossbar for the 1-0 advantage.
Montclair State answered in the ninth minute as sophomore midfielder Owen Murphy knotted the game at 1-1. Gaining the ball off a backwards pass, Murphy cut toward the middle from 10 yards out the top of the box. Powering past a Vassar defender, he found an open shot, rifling the ball into the right corner past a diving
Eric Wnorowski in the Brewers goal.
Second half action saw the Brewers work to net the equalizer as senior middie
Ryan Lane fired in a shot on goal that was quickly saved by Red Hawks keeper Shane Keenan in the 48th minute. Vassar was awarded a corner in the 57th minute as sophomore
Derek Sando fired in a great ball, but a header shot from senior
Kyle Lopes went just high of the net and out of play.
Montclair State capitalized in the 72nd minute, notching the go-ahead tally on Lukovic's header goal. The Red Hawks sent a long arching shot into the zone, which was headed away by a Vassar defender whose angle sent the ball wide right and off of Lukovic and in for the score.
Vassar had several attempts, it's best coming in the 84th minute as sophomore forward
Jackson Hall drove in on goal, cut around a defender for a near open shot, but the ball caromed off the left post and richocheted back into play as Montclair cleared it out.
The visitors owned a 15-13 advantage in shots for the game and held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
In goal, Keenan earned the win with four saves, while Wnorowski shouldered the loss - also making four stops on the day.
Vassar returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Manhattanville for a 7:30pm contest against the Valiants.
