AUBURNDALE, FL – Despite leading off with a home run, the Vassar baseball team fell to a late Trine run to fall 6-16 on Wednesday evening at the RussMatt Invitational. The Brewers move to 1-4 overall, while the Thunder go to 2-5.
It was a fast start for the Brewers, scoring five runs in the first two innings to take a 5-0 lead. Vassar took out the first three Trine batters to move to the bottom of the frame. Junior Jaden Millstein (Margate, NJ) was first to bat and knocked a home run to center field to put Vassar up 1-0. First-year Michael Lee (Mercer Island, WA) tripled, and a Ty Murray (Lenexa, KS) singled to allow Lee to reach home.
Senior Ty Langford (Tujunga, CA) struck out two Thunder batters at the top of the second before the final one grounded out to the third base. The Brewers had another strong performance in the bottom of the inning, with Millstein tripling to center field to bring in Christian Baaki (Amsterdam, NY) for the score. Millstein made it 4-0 after scoring on a passed ball, and an Andrew Kanellis (Burke, VA) sacrifice fly let Lee make it a five-run game.
The Trine bats woke up at the top of the third, responding with six runs to take the lead. Dalton Nikirk singled to allow Avery Fulford to score, and the Thunder brought in two more runs when Easton Rhodes doubled to right field. A Vassar wild pitch and another Thunder single tied 5-5. Jack Kletzly put Trine ahead when he scored on a Matt Weis sacrifice fly before the end of the inning.
Trine pushed its lead to 5-7 in the fourth, but the Brewers were not out yet during their turn to bat. Sophomore Reid Lapekas (McKinney, TX) doubled to center field, and first-year Daniel Laderman tacked on a run to cut the game to 6-7.
The Thunder added four more runs in the sixth to make it 6-11 and then ran up the score to 6-16 in the seventh. Vassar recorded a quick final inning as the Thunder held on to the lead.
Millstein led the Brewers with two hits, two runs, and two RBI, while Lapekas had two hits and one RBI. Laderman tacked on two hits with one run.
Fulford topped the Thunder with four runs and three hits, while Rhodes tallied three runs, three hits, and four RBI.
Vassar looks to bounce back tomorrow when they face Illinois College at 3:15 p.m.
