AUBURNDALE, FL – The Vassar baseball team split Monday afternoon's doubleheader with the Wentworth Institute of Technology (3-1) to pick up its first win of the season. The Brewers (1-2) fell 2-4 in the first game and then won 6-3 in the second.
Vassar started hot in the first game, with sophomore Reid Lapekas (McKinney, TX) batting first at the top of the first. Lapekas picked up his first-career home run by hitting to right-center to give Vassar a 1-0 lead. Two batters struck out before Andrew Kanellis (Burke, VA) tripled to right field. Wentworth was able to strike out the final batter to end the inning.
The Brewers got through the Leopards' batters and capped off the inning with a double play by Lapekas to Nick Greenhawt (Heber City, UT). Vassar went 1-2-3 at the top of the second, and Wentworth tied 1-1 in their turn to bat. Kyle Desjardins singled to center field and then reached third after an error and wild pitch. He scored when the Leopards' batter grounded out.
It was another tough inning for Vassar in the third, but the Brewers pitched well at the bottom of the frame, with Dawson Dullnig (San Antonio, TX) striking out two batters.
Wentworth tacked on two more runs in the fourth when Christian Peruzzi scored on a wild pitch. Matt Rice doubled to left-center, bringing Ryan Putney home to make it 1-3. The Leopards scored again off a wild pitch in the fifth to make it 1-4.
At the top of the seventh, Greenhawt scored off a Jaden Millstein (Margate, NJ) sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-4. The next Vassar batter grounded out to prevent the comeback.
Vassar faired batter in the second game, exploding for four runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. First-year Finn Kaplan-Moore scored following a Michael Lee (Mercer Island, WA) single. Jack Silvera (Los Angeles, CA) singled to the left side to bring Ricardo Reyna (San Antonio, TX) home. Lee picked up the third run on a wild pitch, and then Kanellis scored on a passed ball.
Wentworth answered with a run in the fourth, but Vassar followed up with a Millstein home run to go up 5-1. Silvera brought in another home run in the fifth to push the Vassar lead to 6-1. The Leopards scored twice in the sixth to cut the lead to three.
In the final inning, sophomore Joe Sabo (Cheshire, CT) subbed in to pitch and struck out the last three Wentworth batters to give Vassar the victory.
Senior Sam Brinster (1-0) earns the win after pitching 5.0 innings with six strikeouts. Sabo picks up the save.
The Brewers face La Roche on Tues. Mar. 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the Lake Myrtle Main Field. Â
