Women's Tennis Defeats Bard in League Opener

Brewers post 9-0 victory over Raptors

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY – Powered by a dominant effort from both ends of the lineup, the Vassar College women's tennis team posted a 9-0 victory over Bard College in Liberty League action on Friday evening at the Cross Courts in Wappingers Falls. The Brewers move to 3-0 overall and are now 1-0 in league play. The Raptors move to 0-5 and 0-2 in the Liberty League.

Doubles play saw Vassar's first flight pair of senior captain Melina Stavropoulos and sophomore Sofie Shen record an 8-0 victory over rookies Maya Kelly and Bella Ries. The Brewers gained the 2-0 advantage next from three as rookie Elyse Duley and senior captain Cara Kizilbash bested senior Nicole Parides and rookie Victoria Bagatcholon, 8-0.

The Brewers second flight duo of rookie Macey Dowd and junior Tatum Blalock then posted an 8-0 win of their own, defeating sophomores Lapis Dove and Josie Smith.

Singles action was a near clean sweep for the Brewers. From the first flight, Blalock defeated Kelly, 6-0, 6-1. At two, Shen was a 6-0, 6-0 victor over Reis, while three saw Dowd post a 6-0, 6-0 win against Dove.

At four, Stavropoulos bested Smith, 6-0, 6-0, while five saw Kizilbash with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Bagatcholon. Rounding out the efforts was Duley at six as the rookie recorded a 6-0, 6-0 win against Parides.

The Brewers return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host Mount Holyoke College in a 12pm match at the Walker Field House. Bard is now idle until March 6 when it travels to Skidmore College for a 10am league tilt.
