Box Score ROCHESTER, NY - The Vassar men's tennis team shouldered a tough 5-4 loss to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to open their 2022 spring schedule on Saturday. The Brewers are now 0-1 on the season, while the Tigers move to 1-0.
Doubles action opened with a win at the first flight by RIT senior Jake Wolicki and graduate student Jacob Meyerson, who posted an 8-3 win over Vassar seniors
Mathew Yee and
Mihajlo Ivanovic. The Brewers rebounded and tied the score at 1-1 as sophomores
Benjamin Almquist and
Jay Wong defeated rookie Joel Pho and senior Carter Casimir, 8-1, but the Tigers moved ahead 2-1 at three as rookies Christian Berko and Grahith Movva bested VC sophomore
Arun Guruswamy and rookie
Arnav Agostinho, 8-5.
Singles action saw the Brewers tie it up one more, moving the score to 2-2 after Wong posted a 6-4, 6-1 win from one against Berko. RIT picked up the 3-2 advantage from two as Movva defeated Almquist, 6-3, 7-5, while the home team made it a 4-2 match as Pho posted a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over Agostinho at four. Ivanovic closed the gap to 4-3 win a 6-2, 6-1 victory over rookie Max Chang at five and a tough-fought win at three by Guruswamy over Wolicki (6-2, 4-6, 6-4) tied the match at 4-all.
It all came down to the six pairing as Meyerson battled Vassar rookie
James Balon and won the match for the Tigers with the 6-3, 6-4 decision.
Vassar returns to action tomorrow as it heads to the University of Rochester for a 10am match against the Yellowjackets.
