GENEVA, N.Y. – Four players laid down double-figures, powered by a game-best 18 points from senior captain
Alex Lee as the Vassar College women's basketball team notched a 74-54 win over William Smith College in Liberty League action Saturday at Bristol Gym. The Brewers move to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Herons are now 1-5 with an 0-2 Liberty League mark.
The Brewers opened first quarter action on a 7-0 run, powered by four points from rookie center

Sierra McDermed answered for Vassar on the other end with a trey of her own and the visitors continued to hold pace offensively for an 18-15 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
Second stanza action opened with William Smith closing it to an 18-17 margin on a Kerstin Kelly pull up jumper, but a three from sophomore guard

Alex Lee opened the Vassar lead to 25-17 with 6:00 to go. A McDermed layup later made it a six-point (30-24) lead, but the Herons kept up the intensity, as a pair of free throws late from Brooke Jarvis closed the lead to two (32-30), but the Brewers headed into the intermission with the 34-30 advantage behind a jumper from senior captain
Eliza Srinivasan.
Vassar came out firing in the third quarter, going on a 10-0 run to build up a 44-30 lead, including an inside layup from rookie guard
Caroline Siekman at the 7:34 mark. William Smith battled back, closing the gap to 47-37 on a layup from Mara Bledsoe, but the Brewers continued to dominate down the stretch, closing out the third quarter with a bucket from Tawney for the 51-41 lead.
Another 6-0 run, aided by back-to-back Tawney layups, helped the Brewers expand their lead to 57-41 to start the final quarter of play. The Herons saw Molly Walsh and Mckenzie Mandyck drop in three-pointers, but Vassar's offense continued to power through as a Srinivasan three at 3:47 made it a 65-50 lead for the visitors.
Vassar used another 7-0 run late in the frame, while holding the Herons to just two points over the final 1:03 of the game to earn their first Liberty League win of the season.
Lee led all scorers in the contest, while also posting a team-high six rebounds with three assists and a game-high five steals. Tawney added 14 points, going 7-of-9 from the floor with five boards, an assist, a block and a steal, while Srinivasan had 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor, four boards, a game-high eight assists with three steals. Harvey rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Brewers, dropping in 10 points with three boards, four assists and a steal.
The Herons were led by Jarvis, who had 16 points and eight rebounds in the game. Walsh dropped in nine points, three boards and four assists with two steals, while Kelly and Maddie Patrick each had seven points. Patrick also posted a game0high 11 rebounds, adding a block and two steals.
Vassar returns to action on Tuesday when it plays its final game before the holiday break at home in AFC Gymnasium. The Brewers welcome Union College for a 5:30pm Liberty League tilt.
